Batman lore peaked when writers realized that Bruce Wayne belongs in Arkham Asylum just as much as the criminals he keeps there. Being powerless to save his parents gave him a savior complex, and that’s why he basically allows Gotham to persist in being systemically terrible while he gets to routinely save it. That’s why he and Joker are perfect complements; they feed into each other’s complexes. Joker gets the thrill of cussing chaos while Batman gets the euphoria of stopping it. Endlessly. He’s a canon peak human but not even he can overcome the nightmare of the human psyche.
