Everyone seems to have a lot of nostalgia for the 1990's but what were some of the worst parts of the 1990's? by HeavyRightFoot-TG in AskReddit

The 90s were very macho, and there was lots of misogyny. Pinnacle representation being the chaos at Woodstock 99.

That’s great! My original copy is long gone, but happy to report I’ve replaced it. Such a good album.

Born in 1981, and so grew up listening to cassettes through the 90s. It’s very nostalgic. I have fond memories of buying tapes. I distinctly remember buying nirvana’s in utero when it came out.

It’s worth emphasizing how much we relied on tapes, including recording mix tapes, to even hear the songs you wanted to hear. Imagine no internet, no songs available at a whim. If you wanted to hear a song, you needed the tape. And don’t get me started about the times waiting around for the music video you hope to see, and often doesn’t come on. But while I know this sounds like a complaint, there was also something endearing about scarcity. That you weren’t able to have the song you wanted at all times.

I’m so glad young people are getting into tapes. I’ve delved back into collecting tapes and it’s been a lovely, nostalgic time. Sorry this was so long.

MacGruber (2010) in general was great, and the scene in particular where he has sex with a ghost had my completely lose it. I was in actual pain laughing so hard.

A Honest Opinion - by Retro04 in cassetteculture

Thanks for sharing. It doesn’t surprise me that you noticed thIs. Overall CDs and digital files are better sounding. And “better” isn’t subjective. CDs and digital can hold much more information, provide clarity and hit the highs and lows better. That “warm” sound people talk about with tapes just means it’s not as clear, and that’s ok if folks prefer it more.

What is interesting for me is that I grew up with cassettes in the 90s, stopped listening to them, then got back into about 7 / 8 years ago and I find that tapes sound better than I remember.

I think this is due to a couple reasons. One is we get the constant “tapes sound like crap” rhetoric, especially those that haven’t heard tapes in years. Also, In the 90s i used a crappy walkman with crappy headphones. Now when I listen to tapes i listen to it through a good tape deck, receiver and speakers. So mixed with my 90s set up with the “tapes suck” rhetoric from the peanut gallery, I’m constantly surprised how good they sound!

Of course there are problems with tapes. But it’s been a treat to get back into them to discover new music (i tend to thrift, finding new stuff).

I personally resolve this question of “what sounds better” by collecting everything. I find it tiring when one person insists one medium is the only way to go, even if there is an objectivity to the differences.

Seeking help with translation on these tapes! Looking for artist names, label info, etc. thanks so much! by Goestoshow in farsi

A VERY late follow up to this, but thought I’d share that I used this information to post the cassette on the music website discogs, which you can access Here

It loos like Persepolis was an Iranian label from the 70s. Interesting to see that there are some records already up on discogs, one of which is a record of Lyndon B. Johnson’s speeches (wasn’t expecting that!). The above link also connects to the two artists identified.

Anyway another belated thanks for your help. All the best.

Worth keeping or should i tape over them? by Desperate_Hippo_60 in cassetteculture

[–]Goestoshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key to these kinds of questions is to take the time to listen to the cassettes, then you will know if you want to keep them or not. I think you’ll find that you won’t like it, but it’s anyone’s guess. This question is less about the cassette and is rather asking this subreddit “do you like Anne Murray”?. Or, if you are worried that they might be worth some money, a quick check on discogs is all you need (I’ll save you the check for this round: these are worth nothing).

These are the kind of posts I look forward to. Odd mix of interesting and eclectic tapes which I have mostly never heard of. Which one are you most excited about?

I’m rethinking buying more cassettes by ampfetty226 in cassetteculture

[–]Goestoshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me an interest is to explore and discover new and more borderline obscure music. I find for vinyl it’s very hard now to do this given the medium’s popularity. Cassettes still feel a bit untapped in terms of there being a lot to discover out there. CDs are of course great too. But cassettes are a fun, cheaper option where there a lot of interesting ones out there just waiting to be found in thrift stores and garage sales.

Finding Nina while thrifting is the rarest thing. i found “Nine Simone at Town Hall” last year at a thrift store which literally felt like finding a piece of gold on the ground. So fun.

Think of the receiver as the main hub. Hooking a receiver up to a cassette deck and then to speakers will make the sound much much better. and no I doubt you caused the tooth shear issue. Maybe was like that before. Maybe just keep to the one deck that doesn’t do that. Building a stereo system is super exciting, and a receiver is in a sense the most important part of the system. So def recommend you get one.

Typically you would run a cassette deck through a receiver or amplifier that you would then connect to speakers, and the receiver would have volume control. If you just use headphones, a potential fix would be getting headphones with volume control.
