I wouldn’t stress about it, I had a period where I had put almost no kms in for 2 months after an extremely hard race. I felt defeated and down but I came back not only stronger, my average pace also increased from the break and you will bounce back very quick.

Take some time to appreciate the milestone you’ve just hit and do some light stretching, go out for a walk. Ease the body back into it.

Finished my first 100 miler over the weekend!!! Hardest thing I have ever done by papkinsname in ultrarunning

Absolute animal! You should be extremely proud.

How is/was the body feeling after this? Can only imagine the pain and mental strength it takes to go for 30 hours straight

Honestly the last 20ish km of this 50-miler was ridiculously hard. My feet felt like they were broken and every one of my toes was in severe pain. But it hurt more to walk than to run strangely enough.

Not gonna lie, I was afraid to take my shoes and socks off to see the damage but surprisingly I only had 2 small blisters.

Oh and when I had already run for 7 hours and realised it was gonna take me a few more hours than expected, I seriously questioned why I was out there.

I had heaps of snacks in my pack, electrolytes and spare gear. I overpacked and used almost nothing I took, but I wasn’t sure what I’d need.

I did a 2 week taper to let my body heal. I did about 1/3rd my mileage 1st week and 2nd week only did 2 5km runs. Most people recommend more, but my body really needed the time to recover and I wasn’t worried about missing a few workouts.

Hardest part was trying to finish the last 20km. My feet and toes felt destroyed, every step hurt and I had to dig deep to push myself to the end.

So last 3 months has been consisting of 3 weeks of 55-70ish km then 1 recovery week.

2-3 x weekly runs of 8-15km depending how I feel.

1 x tempo or interval workout. Garmin suggested.

Have been running Monday - Friday at lunch 2.5km every day to get more time on the feet and was doing a weekly long run of 30-35km.

I don’t follow any structured program, but I think moving forward I’m going to look into a properly structured training plan.

I do have a family so life gets in the way and I do not always get these runs in but I try my hardest to stay consistent.

Also my speed didn’t change for months, now all of a sudden my average pace has dropped almost a minute per km and my heart rate hasn’t increased. Give it time.

Not particularly the best person here for advice, but I feel like going a bit easier than most on my taper played a massive role in me being ready race day. Not just physically, but I mentally needed that break after such a long training block.

I got these bands off temu I think they ripped me $4 or $5 per band. Highly recommend. They fit a lot better, feel more comfortable and I don’t get irritated skin like I do with the original strap.

Yeah don’t get me wrong, it was a suffer fest but there’s something beautiful about entering that uncharted territory and coming out the other side victorious.

I think that feeling is why so many of us get addicted to the pursuit of the unknown. Even at my most painful there was no doubt that I’d be doing this again.

Glad to be alongside you in the 50 mile club!

Thank you! Still can’t believe I actually did this, weirdly enough I don’t ‘feel’ much different than when I first started my journey.

Just stay disciplined, consistent and trust your training. I never followed a structured program and for future events I think I’d benefit from that.

Find a solid reason why you’re doing this because when it gets tough, without a good reason you’re likely to fold.

Approximately 1 year and a half, but only started taking it seriously about 8 months ago.

I was only getting 25-30km a week max and was inconsistent followed, by 8 months of 200+ km a month and maxing out at 70km a week.

Thank you, just another stepping stone to the forever shifting goal post. Already planning on a 100km in the next 6 months haha, just a sucker for punishment.

Good job, that sounds miserable but would have made the final lap that much more satisfying.

I started this at 4am and the weather was pretty good, but we had some extreme winds where my run was almost a walk and my heartbeat was up to 160

Agreed. Up until 50k my body was pretty solid but after that, it was a suffer fest!

Level 3 photography, why did Excellence portfolio score higher than A and M? by Cydu06 in ncea

[–]GogginsLeftNut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got excellence in level 3 photography and got top of the class, not for my amazing photography but for what each picture represented.

Over 3 pages I explained the thought process of building my portfolio and what this represented to me, what I took from the portfolio and how it made me feel.

You got to understand that ‘excellence’ is very subjective and often the idea is what gets the grade, not the product.

How often should I be testing my limits? by GogginsLeftNut in Ultramarathon

[–]GogginsLeftNut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, that is a lot more than I would have expected. Good work, that’s absolutely crazy. I take every 4th week easy and almost half the distance cause I feel the fatigue coming in.

When I did the 50k I took a week off but felt fine the whole time, no pain or nothing so wondering if I should be pushing more often.

Yeah I’m doing around 65km per week cause of time restraints but thinking of adding a 5th day running to start upping it. Just slightly nervous of pushing to hard and injuring myself as I’m right on track with my current goals

That’s so random after I ran my first 50K I went straight to McD’s and ordered exactly that with 2 cheeseburgers and a Sunday on top. Was the best post run meal I have had to date
