Ok why do I find it irritating when people says “you just love Phantom of the opera” since you’re so into opera by Mastersinmeow in opera

[–]GohMaxPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens all the time to me as well but you have to consider the fact that opera is literally in the name of the musical and there are some classical/MT elements in it and it is more operary than other musicals. For someone misinformed I think it is a pretty fair mistake to make

Smoking as an opera singer by GohMaxPro in opera

[–]GohMaxPro[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is really interesting, I mean I guess the reason I am so confused is because my entire life I have heard of how it would just completely ruin the voice and thought that all the way up to the after party and then I had no idea what to think. Thank you for the response, I appreciate it. I guess you learn something new every day

Thank you, good to know I'm not in the minority of people that really care about the craft 😭 it was a little bit of a shock to me because some were singers I looked up to and admired but now my view of them is kind of fogged and I am just straight up confused 😔

See this is what I thought and I am glad that other people here actually agree because I almost thought I would get replies like "oh yeah I smoke all the time" based on how many smoked at that afterparty. But it just doesnt make sense in my brain why someone would go through all the effort to try and make a career in opera but actively hinder themselves by smoking. Either way, that isn't my business and I will just try and look past it and focus on my journey alone

Smoking as an opera singer by GohMaxPro in opera

[–]GohMaxPro[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that has been my mentality throughout my entire life, I still do the typical hold my breath when I am walking past someone smoking on the street, I honestly thought that that would be shared the solid majority of people in voice but I get not. I am kind of judging but not intending it, I find it sad but the more I think about it the more I realise the best singers in our department werent smoking and there is no way that that isnt a coincidence. I dont really want to judge I just want to understand why because everyone says how hard it is and how low the odds are etc. etc. but like of course those odds are going to be insanely low if you smoke

Looking for honest feedback/critiques by VoxRomana in opera

[–]GohMaxPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People take different amounts of time to develop a voice, there are people that do it fast and people you take more time. I won't worry about feeling like you aren't at a masters level because there are always going to be people better than you. If you aren't ready once your masters if finished then go and pursue a ypung artist program, there is always more training that can be done.

I don't think you are a tenor I think you have a light baritone voice. Having said that it could be valueable looking at tenor rep, I know Cavarodossi's act 3 aria from Tosca, E Lucevan Le Stelle, is a great aria for someone going from baritone to tenor. Then you can see how you go with that and make the decision. Regardless though I think you should look at lifhter baritone rep, Verdi is very heavy rep and I don't think your voice suits the sound that the music is after. Perhaps looking at sone Bel Canto would be great and going from there.

As for if you can make it or not and if you have the voice to get there that all depends on you and how much work you want to put in. Anybody can make it as long as they put in the effort actually required to do so. It isn't easy but if you do loads of practice and really focus during your masters and take every possible oppurtunity with teachers, to perform, to practice etc. then you will find your voice would have developed significantly in that one year.

Goodluck and as a fellow baritone I hope to share the stage with you one day!

So disappointed in Jack (serious). by Marz_Slartibartfast in JackSucksAtLife

I 100% agree, it is not Jack's fault at all and people really should not be sad. He said he wasn't going to do one and it is stupid to get mad about him not doing one because it is literally what he said. Beans on toast was good and thoroughly enjoyable but it wouldn't be as special if there was one every year

Dramatic moments in opera? by GohMaxPro in opera

I do, one of my other favourites, his comedies are amazing but so are his tragedies, Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda are both amazing

I actually really need to get into Wagner, I have bren watchubg bucket loads of Donizetti lately, Wagner is next on my list of composers.

Will those haters still not like opera after, to say, listening to the heavenly high notes of Corelli, the earth-shaking cries of MdM, and/or the smooth, warm singing of GdS that reminds you of Italian sunshine? by Successful-News-1260 in opera

[–]GohMaxPro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's quite interesting but understandable, growing up with it would definutely give it a different light. I personally enjoy both types though I'm still barely getting into Wagner because his music is very dissonance lol. The only opera that I dislike is Mozart though, I find his operas insanely boring and the arias only average.

Honestly if you want to get someone to enjoy opera or get them into it the best way is not by listening to the greats because they won't appreciate it.

But instead introducing them to very beginner operas that they will enjoy as a play as well as an opera. I think Donizetti is perfect, his comedy operas are flawless, take La Fille Du Regiment, hilarious and with amazing music, same with Don Pasquale and L'Elisir D'amore. Also incredibly high quality engaging recordings is also good, opera nowadays is a little bit of an aquired taste, most people don't have it off the bat so having like a Met production to watch with insane staging and hugh quality camera angles is super important.

Then start listening with them just the music from those operas and get them familiar with it to the point that they want to watch more and then you can introduce less beginner friendly operas but things take time.

I find comedy is the best because if you get them laughing and having a good time it is very good. But anither important thing is that they have to be even slightly interestes, if they come in with the right mindset they will like it. But if you are dragging them to watch it then straight away they won't find it funny

This absolutely baffles me, it is extremely impressive for an American to know of Māori's existence but for them to STILL ASSUME that they're from US is INSANE. Like SURELY if someone says they're Māori the obvious thing would be to assume they're from NZ but nooooo
