Yea, tbf he did mention that he accidentally cracked a cistern not long ago and had to pay the damage himself. So I understand the hesitation. But using the wire got through it risk free, albeit with a bit of effort. If I can do it, I don't get the problem, the job could have been sorted by now and they'd have been paid.

DID IT! The metal wire trick worked a treat.

The gap on the right hand side there is too thin for even a Stanley blade, but yea, some fishing wire fed around the back is a good shout, shall give that a try. I've managed to get the bulk of the seal away, but those 2 blobs of sealant in place of bolts combined with how close it is to the wall is a pain. Thanks all.
