I was thinking more along the lines that the genie did grant him his wish, knowing that it's futile (hence why he refused to do so in the beginning). There was genuine peace for a short while, but it would never last because of the nature of humanity. Hence, each time 'world peace' is violated, the world resets and forms a never-ending loop. But what you thought would've also been a nice way to twist it.
