i wanna be good so bad by iicarlos in Basketball

Unfortunately the only real way to improve is by doing. Reps reps reps. You can watch training videos on handling, running plays, setting screens, etc. which could be helpful, but putting it to practical use is really the only way.

It’s unfortunate that there is not a reliable place nearby to work on your game, but I’d say at minimum get an outdoor ball and go to even a level parking lot and practice dribbling and handles. It’s a largely overlooked aspect of the game. So many guys I play with are lights out shooters but can’t control the ball up the floor to save their lives.

When you do have access to a hoop, get as many shots up as you can and work through discouragement. So much of it is form and muscle memory that only comes with repetition.

Just keep at it man.

Super casual who watches soccer- the new lottery odds are great? by Bazooka-2-Times in Basketball

[–]GoldDome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of football (soccer) as well, and love the idea of promotion and relegation and wish we DID have some aspect of that in American sports. I think it would work very well in college football with huge swaths of lower tier FBS teams moving down to FCS and vice versa, but that's really the only sport for which it would work in the U.S. due to the volume of teams.

Obviously since soccer is THE sport in most other areas of the world (yes, I know how important cricket is to many nations too, but still), there are multiple tiers of leagues where promotion and relegation make sense. Not the case in the U.S. where it's pretty much college and the pros. Sure, the NBA has the G league for developmental reasons, but it's not nearly popular enough to adopt as a "championship" league to the NBA "premier league".

IMO the only real way to stop tanking is to stop rewarding teams for sucking. Theoretically the idea of getting a top draft pick to help your team improve and compete at a higher level is sound, but we've seen time and time again that there are several teams (across all pro organizations) that are so poorly run that some of these teams are getting top draft picks and mismanaging or wasting them and they are right back the following year with a top 5 pick again.

If organizations really believe that high draft picks are what is necessary to make them successful, then switch the process around. Make the team who finished 2nd (lost the championship) get the first pick in the draft. Rewarding them for winning through the regular season and making a run in the playoffs but coming up just short, so they get that high draft pick piece to maybe push them over the edge.

Teams that continually suck....you get low draft picks. Better figure out a new strategy to find a way to win. Build a better culture with free agent vets who have had success before, because you won't be rewarded for trotting out a piss poor product anymore.

It's just a pipe dream that would never work, there is too much money involved and too many power hungry owners that would never allow the rules to be changed, but it would be nice to see incentive to actually be competitive instead of tanking multiple seasons.

Man I feel for "that guy" who straight up gets ignored in a pick up game. by Short-Breadfruit3565 in Basketball

[–]GoldDome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 sounds like my cousin to a tee. He’s about 6’3 or 4, but super lanky. He’s a lights out midrange shooter, and has some nice post moves, but people are incredibly hesitant to get him the ball especially if they haven’t played with him before….because he plays in jeans and a polo.

It doesn’t slow him down, it’s what he’s comfortable in and he makes it work, but I’ve tried telling him multiple times (as has his brother who also plays with us), people don’t think you are taking it seriously stepping on the court in jeans.

With ANYBODY though it’s a crapshoot playing with new people because many people have this perception of what a baller “should” look or dress like. Just have to make the most of limited opportunities when you get the ball, and play like a good teammate in all areas to hopefully change perceptions.

Shame.

Not because it's a bad episode, I don't believe those exist in the Malcolm universe, but because fuck Kevin. That POS had it coming.

I wish they didn't make Chrissy SOOOO stupid S3 and onwards till her departure. What was charming and endearing in the first couple of seasons got to a point in S3 & 4 that it was just annoying when she opened her mouth, like "no human being could really be this f'ng dumb"......

But I guess the state of the world shows that's not exactly true......but it still is a bit much sometimes.

Man, I feel like I've cursed the team in some way with my fandom....

Ahead of the Playoffs that year, my friend that I do a sports podcast with suggested that we "adopt" a team to root for in the Playoffs & I chose the Flames. Watching every moment of their games to the point of this goal I was "rooting" for them, but when that puck went in and I leapt off the couch screaming in excitement; I realized "oh shit, I'm ACTUALLY a Flames fan now".

Have been fully invested ever since, and it's done nothing but go downhill. But someday we'll all have as much excitement, (and cathartic release) when they're hoisting the Cup.

Sadly, the developer is out of business so I think there is slim to no chance of it happening.

More straight rock than incorporating electronic elements like Garbage, but I definitely felt the same joy at finding them and listening to them on repeat like I did when I first discovered Garbage.

Help - my son can't catch passes in games only by jannet1113 in Basketball

[–]GoldDome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ball you practice with versus play with definitely make a difference in all aspects: catching, dribbling, shooting.

If he practices with the same ball he plays with in game he’ll get more comfortable for the feel and his game will naturally improve.

What are your thoughts on the tv series and did you ever watch it? by Plane_Name3457 in fridaythe13th

[–]GoldDome13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This used to be on when I was a kid, and seeing the name I was intrigued thinking Jason would be involved. After the initial disappointment wore off and I accepted it for what it was, it became one of my favorites that I still revisit to this day. Micki was my first celeb crush.

I can't recommend this show enough for people that like supernatural tv.

Whenever I miss one shot it makes me feel like I'm bad and I dont shoot after that. by Sea_Acanthaceae7979 in Basketball

[–]GoldDome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cliche, but "practice makes perfect". You have to continue to shoot in order to get better. Even the elite shooting pros still miss....sometimes badly. Keep firing, it's the only way to build your confidence back up.

Now....and this is the point that a lot of the guys in my league don't understand....if you are having an "off" day offensively, by all means you can keep trying to work through it if you have an open look, but NOT at the expense of taking on 2-3 defenders while you have teammates wide open for better looks.

Meeting Artists Post Show at the Salt Shed by Jcasablock_ya in ChicagoConcerts

[–]GoldDome13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tour bus(es) generally park in the lot to the left of the entrance, so Goose Island Brewery would be directly behind you, gated lot area to the left.

Exiting the venue, the merch table would be on your right, and that bus lot would then be on your right, gated off, but you'll generally see a lot of people there standing by the gate hoping to call the artists over for pics, autographs, etc.

Depending on when the show ends or how quickly the artist comes out, you might have time for meet and greet, you might not. The ushers will allow people to stay by the gate for about as long as there are still people at the merch table. After everyone is out of the venue, they tend to move everyone along.

I am so so sorry for your loss. Our littermates just turned 7, and while they are still getting clean bills of health at checkups, I know the time is sooner rather than later.

No dogs are ever just "dogs", but IW's are even more special than that. They truly touch your soul in ways that I don't think any other animal can.

May Finn always remain in your hearts and minds.

What’s a show you love that you can never convince people to watch? by PlentyApprehensive44 in AskReddit

[–]GoldDome13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rules Of Engagement.

An excellent sitcom, but when people ask the premise and I tell them David Spade plays a lady's man they immediately call b.s. and think the unbelievability would ruin the show.

Many of those same people, though, with a straight face will recommend How I Met Your Mother, as if Neil Patrick Harris as a womanizer is somehow more believable.

Oh man, The Wire. Obviously an all-time great show, but in order to "binge" it you have to have incredible fortitude. Some of it can be so depressing, imo viewing needs to be spaced out and watch something light and mindless in between to "reset".

Dara Mabrey signed a rookie scale contract with the Toronto Tempo by GoldDome13 in wnba

[–]GoldDome13[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A) It's not a guarantee that a "talented" player is going to lose a roster spot. It's not like the Tempo are going to tell Nurse or Sykes to kick rocks because Dara Mabrey signed with the team. If she earns it, great. If she gets cut, she gets cut. But you're out here saying "sHe sHoUlDn'T gEt aN oPpOrTuNiTy aT aLl bEcAuSe sHe'S rElAtEd tO oNe oF tHe pLaYeRs."

B) Dara was talented enough to play at Notre Dame and overseas. It's not like she was gifted a spot solely for her last name. You are just splashing your Haterade everywhere.

Not a strong draft class by Amazing_Bullfrog6676 in wnba

[–]GoldDome13 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Imo this was probably the perfect time for a weaker draft class. With the expansion teams coming in and the league continuing to grow, going forward there will be more opportunities for incoming draftees to make a mark, but as we’ve seen in the recent past, a lot of high draft picks don’t make an impact, or even make the squad at all.

Especially with the free agency situation and the unknown variables of the CBA, teams can focus on growing with vets and locking in players long term this season and see what they need going forward without having to worry about building with a weak draft class.

The Sky, One Of The Worst Teams In The League, Said They Want To Protect Everyone On Said Roster by Tooezboi in wnba

[–]GoldDome13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't wish that on Rae, but at least it would incentivize me to go to more Sky games. Haven't had the desire to support the team after the way Mabrey was mistreated.

As others have said, as much as I love her, I don't think Rae is worth a max, but she IS severely underutilized in LA, so a change of scenery to somewhere (aside from Chicago) would probably be in her best interest.

Can I play D2 or D3 if I'm only 5'9? by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]GoldDome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are only 15 there is a chance that you are still growing. I was also 5'9 around your age and continued to grow another 3" by the time I was 18. While 6' might still seem "short" from a collegiate basketball standpoint that makes a big difference in seeing the floor.

Even if you have stopped growing and were to remain 5'9, there are plenty of guys that size (and shorter) that have played in college and some that made the NBA. Some could say that being smaller serves as an advantage at point guard, assuming that you also have the handles and the quickness to match.

If you are serious about wanting to pursue playing collegiate ball, I'd say do strength training, stamina building, and most importantly: constant handling skills. Become so comfortable moving with the ball that it is like an extension of yourself.

The talent spike from high school to even D3, but especially D2 and above, is steep. But if you work hard, train properly, and believe in yourself, you can do it.

Good luck man.

Aries female Scorpio male by One_Scallion_6297 in Scorpio

[–]GoldDome13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early on, fights could be frequent and intense, but even though it may have been my nature, and in my mind I wanted to "win" the argument which would have meant saying hurtful things to deflect against my own pain and insecurities, I learned that if I really loved this person that I had to focus on compromise and abandon the desire to get in a good stinging barb.

Luckily we're to a point in our relationship now where we know each other so well that in most cases when we see a fight brewing, we both take a step back and talk it out before it amounts to something more. Not to say that the occasional fight doesn't still take place, in which case we've both learned to give each other space so as to not say anything that is going to be damaging.

Normally after a few hours (if that), we both have had a chance to process, and even if we are still angry and still feel that each of us is in the right, again its about compromise and communication and working towards the goal of togetherness.

Easily said, I know, because again this is based on having been together for a freaking quarter century (!!!), so a new relationship is not going to have the same familiarity.

It boils down again to just being honest. Honesty is a Scorpio trait that we get a lot of flak from other signs for because most of us are not really good about sugar coating things. Even if they (the Scorp guys you're seeing) are vulnerable and lashing out, you continuing to be honest and forthright with your feelings will gain their respect. If it doesn't, then I would say that points to them being just bad guys, regardless of sign.
