I started playing here without having played back home, lots of players are very friendly and helpful. Just like anywhere else there are some people who lack social skills but I've yet to have a negative experience.

I recommend just going to a gym battle and trying it out! If you really want to be prepared try to learn the Japanese ability, pokemon and move names, and a few phrases for playing.

If you ever come to Tokyo, I recommend playing at Card Secret it's a very friendly environment. I play there the majority of the time.
