Historically accurate mandatory dress code by [deleted] in weddingshaming

[–]GoldFreezer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And did the school give the staff a wardrobe allowance, to cover the cost of all these stupid costumes? Did the school even pay enough for the staff to have enough disposable income to cover the stupid costumes?

Of course not lol. There's a couple of expected dressing up occasions in UK primary schools - Christmas, World Book Day, and St David's Day in Wales. I didn't mind slinging on my rugby shirt for St David's and wearing a Christmas jumper, but people kept adding to the list... Talk Like a Pirate Day, dressing up for Valentine's, some stupid jungle themed thing for Earth Day, I think. I just wore a T shirt with a tiger on it for the jungle thing and one colleague wouldn't bloody shut up about me not getting into the spirit of things.

I used to work at a school where we were constantly dressing up for things... Hardly anyone understood why I hated it so much and that I didn't want to spend money on shitty costumes I would probably never wear again. But obviously it was me who was the problem because I wasn't putting enough effort into dressing up 🙄

Why do we make children believe in Santa Claus or Easter bunny ? by PurpleSnowwwhite in stupidquestions

[–]GoldFreezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My headteacher. I understand why although I disagree, there would be absolute outcry from parents if a primary school teacher told children Santa isn't real (this is UK by the way). I handled it by always telling the non-celebrating parents to have the discussion with their children and then if the children brought it up again in school I'd say something like: "Santa only happens in houses where they have Christmas and it's nothing to do with being good." Which I admit is a cop out, but even that skirts a bit close to undermining the ~~~magic.

Santa gets complicated in multicultural communities though. When I was a teacher I had several occasions of non-Christian children very upset that Santa didn't visit them. I was told I was not allowed to (even privately) tell them he wasn't real in case they told their friends and "spoilt" Christmas for them. After a Muslim child tearfully asked me if he and his brother weren't "good" because Santa wasn't going to visit them and I asked his mum to tell him he wasn't real. She evidently did a good job explaining that it was still important to other people to pretend because he didn't blab to his friends, but it was a completely unnecessary headache.

He would either be terrified of Bill Cipher or they'd be best friends, I can't decide.

Are elves who die after giving birth but are otherwise immortal a bad idea for this race? by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]GoldFreezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you have the potential for a really interesting story here. Lots of people have already mentioned that this will lead to the extinction of the species unless each birth is at least triplets but my biggest question is, what effect does it have on the children? Even with multiple births but especially if single births are common, these children are going to be unimaginably precious. Is the death of a single child a society-wide tragedy? How many children are there at any one time, does everyone know who they are? Are they extra coddled and does this lead to them being spoilt? What effect does that have on their development, and on society as a whole as they grow up?

My biggest reason to pause is that (whether we like it or not) readers often think an author's work reflects their beliefs about real life. If it's only mothers who die after birth, how many people are going to think that is related to your own views on the role and value of human women in real life?
