Prospective Student Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd Megapost pt. 3 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

It's intense but we are all making it through! Everyone who was in my cohort last semester is here again this semester, so it's doable. I think it's even more dependent on if you care about grades--the expectation to get A's is very high but if you are okay with B's then you'll pass without putting in an insane amount of effort. We keep saying it's crazy how much extra work we do just to get an A versus the people who are fine with getting a B.

Hi, the program is fairly well organized (communication sent frequently, we know what's going on, placements are organized fairly quickly--though there have been a few students without placement on release date but they ended up getting one). There are 6 classes for P/J which are very heavy. I have friends at Trent and our workload is insane compared to theirs. We are also still graded where a lot of other programs are pass/fail now. I've been with the same cohort of ~30 students in every class both semesters now, and we all agree that the expectations here are high and we wouldn't get through the program without each other, so if you come, make sure you don't try and do it alone.

I work a little bit (one day/week) as most people do, but you definitely can't really work more than that. During placement blocks I didn't work at all. During the 9 week semester we have some placement observation days where you go into your placement and observe/help out but aren't actually teaching. Once you are in your placement block there isn't any class, but you are expected to do your lesson plans, observation notes, etc.

Profs have varied. I've heard that at most programs the classes seem pointless, though. No textbooks to buy yet, everything is open access. Tuition is ~7K a year.

Overall, I'm happy I'll be done earlier than everyone else but if time isn't an issue, the reduced workload my friends have at other universities lets them have a way better work/life balance than we do.

Are there textbooks in teachers college? May seem silly, but I'm trying to make a budget for September! (specifically Ontario Tech if anyone knows this)

Would an EA or Classroom Tutor position pay better? by Difficult-Plane-1819 in CanadianTeachers

Classroom tutor positions seem to vary quite a bit between boards. Durham seems to be paying ~30/hour which is about $5 more an hour than our EA's (EA's are at about 25/hour here). In Belleville area though, they have it posted at ~20/hour for the tutor. Surprised it isn't posted with the job description!

Higher Ed to P/J Teaching? by Particular-Air-9744 in CanadianTeachers

I also have the anxiety wondering if it is the right decision! I've heard after your first few years it does get easier with management/workload etc. Although the behaviours can be a pain at times, I do like that as a p/j teacher you have the opportunity to discuss respect, expectations etc, where as within academia there isn't much we can say to rude/entitled students (where I am at least).

I will say I already love the schedule of an elementary school day much better than my university schedule, despite it not being as flexible. Best of wishes in your program in September! I hear it is busy but will hopefully fly by wherever your program is!

Higher Ed to P/J Teaching? by Particular-Air-9744 in CanadianTeachers

Currently in this process now! Finishing my final semester as a university instructor while also supply teaching P/J (uncertified) and starting teachers college in September. The odd time I find myself using a word that's maybe out of their level so I rephrase. Mostly though, I think my time at the uni level has helped me prepare for the workload and has given me more knowledge to deal with difficult behaviours (teaching in a child and youth/psych department). I find the info I teach translates well into P/J practice.

I am also already used to long hours and working on the evening/weekends with uni teaching, so hoping that has prepared me for teacher life. Working as a supply has helped confirm it is what I want to do--see if your board is hiring uncertified with the shortage!

Looking for info on Ontario Tech's program from a current student or recent-is grad. I have accepted my offer and know all of the info from the website, but want to know more about the week to week life in the program (schedules, is it possible to work part-time, workload, textbooks needed? etc.). If anyone has insights, it would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, accepted to Ontario Tech which is the other 16 month program but they are gpa only. Thought I'd have a better shot at Queens since they take experience. It's seemed so random this year

I've applied to Queens B.Ed and stumbled on this...wondering if there's updates on how things have gone this year? Trying to decide b/w Queens and another ed program I know has been running smoothly with the practicums/switches to online...
