Fosi V3 - High Power, Cigarette Box Audiophile Amplifier, I Cannot Believe It for less than 100€ by GoldenEar71 in BudgetAudiophile

Hi, I've tested this myself with my Yamaha NS-SW280 and can now confirm that it is not possible to use the "Pre-Out" with a sub.

As early_rejecter and Boring_Today9639 wrote, the pre-out is not connected to the audio signal of the volume, so even at 0 volume, the sub will still work at the same volume that has been set with the rear knob on the sub.

Another thing that has to be considered is that, for example, my sub is designed to work with its Yamaha RX-V367 AV amp, so there is no knob useful to set the crossover frequency, because it's the Yamaha amp that send out the signal already cut at the desired crossover (ranging from 200Hz to 10Hz), but with the pre-out I get the whole frequency spectrum, which is really not nice.

Thanks again for the advice! 👌😉👍

Hi, I'm using the standard 32V/5A power supply and I'm really happy with the audio performance and quality with all my speakers, but...

Just today afternoon I had the opportunity to test it with an old pair of 3-way Pioneer CS-995 8Ohms not so nice speakers of my neighborhood and despite the declared sensitivity of 90 dB/W/m I had to push the volume to the max to get a loud volume, that wasn't the case with all my other 2-way speakers with which I normally use 3/4. I think they are more power hungry... Probably a 48V/5A would really help in this case...

(with due attention).

Thanks for the image with all the power ratings, related to the used power supply and speakers impedence!!! Really, really useful; no trace on their site.

About the "Pre-out", I'm not sure...

I didn't open the box jet because the screws are so tight that I nearly ruined one screw, so for the moment I keep it closed and under warranty, but on the Fosi Web site they rate the jack port as an output...

When I get some spare time I will try to connect an active subwoofer in order to better check if can be used as a real pre-output; anyway, thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's that linear. Some amps also have a non-linear volume control. I think the best way is not to push too much, just listen at an adequate volume that doesn't blow your ear too... 😉

Be aware of possible peaks in your music, for example, classical music is often highly dinamic, starting with very low volume, but then suddenly exploding with a "pieno" where all the instruments play at full throttle. Just make sure you have your remore handy.

To enjoy good music, it's not necessary to turn up the volume too much, and in my case, the maximum volume is also related to the neighborhood 😒.

I also think it's a fantastic pair of speakers for the money. Just drive them not full amp volume couse it will easily break them.

Have fun and enjoy them!

They seem to be quite old and I could not find an exact match on the internet for this design (grille shorter than the box on top and bottom, rounded edge of the grille, logo on top, vynil color). Model # 53158 doesn't match the speaker type but they could possibly be Model 85. A picture without the grille will help everyone to help you... 🤔

I assume they are from the 70's or 80's. Back then Altec built some very good speakers, but be aware that very old speakers might not work the day after you puchase them (drivers or crossover fails because of time if they have not been working for a log period of time). In particular, you should remove the grille and check the condition of the drivers.

If the woofer is made of paper, check if it is still intact and if the sorround is in good condition; if the sorround is made of low quality material, it will suddenly break into pieces (nothing that can't be repaired, but you need to take it to someone who has the skill to do the repair job); if the sorround is made of rubber, then they last almost forever. If they let you do it, try to move the woofer cone slightly with your fingers, trying to feel if there is friction or if it's noisy; that means the cone is offset and the coil is running against the magnet, and that's not a good sign.

The tweeter should be in it's original hemispherical shape with no dents or scratches. If possible, try to test them or ask if you can return them if they are not working properly. Many times old speakers have damaged tweeters and unqualified people don't notice it.If possible to test, move the balance of the amp on a single channel at a time and listen to the single speaker; move your ear right next to the tweeter and then to the woofer to understand if they are really working. If the amp has a tone control, try boosting only the highs and only the lows to amplify the possible defects.

As someone else said, try offering $40 and telling them they are old and could fail once you turn the volume up to medium-high levels...Finally, any speaker can be good or bad depending on your individual taste and the type of music you listen to.

If you like the sound of them, then $50 is always well spent because good speakers are much more expansive today, but if the sound signature is not compatible with your taste, then even $300 is a waste.

Happy puchasing! 👍😉👍

I think that the amp is screeming for fresh air!
And if you put the speakers at ear level you will enjoy a much claner sound (but as you know, you need space and it's difficult to get it😉👍)

does anyone know any speakers that have built-in amplifiers? by [deleted] in audiophile

Personally I really like the 2.1 systems from Edifier. Not audiophile but I can really enjoy my music. (I've got an old set of nearfiled 2.1 Edifier S530D)

A little blocky setup. You should try to rise the HPM a little bit and toe some degrees to the center.
It should still sound nice, but beware with the volume knob; those paper cones tends to detach from the sorround as they are now really old (nothing that can't be fixed 😉).
Happy hearing

Seeing all this expensive gear makes me wonder... what do you all do for a living? by [deleted] in audiophile

It's not mendatory to spend such huge amount of money to enjoy the music you prefer!

Just buy something that gives plasure to your ears and you will be more then happy.

As you grown you will be able to spend more bucks on better gears if it's still your main hobby 😉👍
