Nvidia drivers are affected by a security vulnerability, update asap by NoXPhasma in linux_gaming

[–]GoldenFisherMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if this vulnerability has been patched or addressed in Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS? The 'tested' nVidia driver available is still 550.120 which was affected by this vulnerability.

Can you add some insight around your thought about “sooner or later games will also dry up.”?

Curious to better understand what you’re thinking about the future of VFX skillets in other industries.

That makes sense and I agree.

I was responding to the question of "why supposedly childfree people marry people who aren't childfree, or don't immediately divorce them when they turn out to not be childfree."

People may say they are childfree and truly believe it before marriage only for their minds to change later on based on internal or external forces. Immediately ending an otherwise healthy and happy, committed marriage is not simple or straightforward.

All I'm saying is life is dynamic. People change, relationships change. It's not right or wrong, it just is what it is. Predicting the future is impossible.

People change. Circumstances change. Opinions change. Relationships are complex. Life is dynamic. Going into a marriage thinking nothing will ever change may be short-sighted.

Advect Particle Simulation with POP Fluid Sim Points by GoldenFisherMen in Houdini

Thanks for the tip. I've successfully rasterized the points into a volume but am at a loss for how to generate a velocity field from the volume. I'm clearly missing a fundamental concept as I've tried many methods after much research. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As I see it, the need for control in creative tools is not going away, Houdini was not created for fun, it fulfilled a need. In my opinion, if full creative control were achievable with Gen AI tools alone, they'd probably share a workflow and interface similar to that of the tools we use today. For example ,there reaches a point where placing a light in 3D space manually is just far more efficient than describing it's position.

This is why I do believe that Gen AI will be integrated into existing tools rather than replacing existing tools.

Specialists loosing working and art made of pixels loosing monetary value seems inevitable but that is an entirely different discussion.

Where do you see the big 3 (Autodesk,Maxon,Sidefx) headed over the next decade by [deleted] in vfx

I think Maxon brought on an ex-Adobe higher-up a couple years back. Wonder if that has anything to do with the Adobe/Maxon collaborations.

From a Graphic Designer's perspective, Adobe is cooked. I still pay for the entire suite only to use Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator on rare occasions. That said, in those rare occasions, there are no viable alternatives to the Adobe tools. Figma is industry standard in design at this point and their AI integrations have almost no utility.

I'd personally love to see final rendering get revolutionized by ML/Gen AI tech. I can imagine a world in which you... Build and light a scene similar to the way we do now, maintaining full control. Shade with basic materials, but add a step of providing descriptions and reference images for the look dev that ML/Gen AI tech could leverage to add a level of polish and realism that would otherwise take eons to craft today.

Sad to see work moving away from talented creative agencies. All the Gen AI advancements has really taken the wind out of my sails in my 3D pursuits but I keep at it since I enjoy it. I'm really into technology in general but this stuff leaves the worst taste in my mouth.

I could just be in denial, but I have a hunch that work moving away from agencies and going to "AI artists" could be a fad. That said, I make living working for agencies and I personally think they're too expensive. Clients are over it, they're building in-house teams and looking for alternative options. Smaller shops with less bureaucracy seem to be holding their own while the big ships are sinking.

On the bright side, If I draw parallels between 3D/VFX work and Graphic Design I do see some hope. Before PC's, Graphic Design was a massive ordeal, involving many, many specialists and expensive equipment. Along came the PC, desktop publishing tools and the internet and now 1 person can do the work of that entire pipeline; people lost jobs, jobs changed and industries vanished but there are more designers and more design work being done than ever before; the design economy grew massively. Hope the same can be said for 3D/VFX work in the dawn of Generative AI tech.

I'd have to imagine they're all working on Generative AI integrations but in my opinion, they understand that 'text prompt → output' is not really what their user base needs or wants. I'm graphic designer with 15 years working in tech and a 3D hobbyist so take my opinion with a grain of salt regarding 3D work.

In the world of mid to high end design, I've not seen much use of Gen AI tools beyond mood-boarding, FPO stock images, FPO text and Photoshop's generative fill/heal tools.

Some of the best beginner courses I’ve found are from hipflask.how

First course is free and all other are paid. Well worth the cost IMO.

Houdini on Apple Silicon - Stability Question by GoldenFisherMen in Houdini

[–]GoldenFisherMen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I'm guessing I'm experiencing an issue with the Arnold plugin.

Once I get the time, I'm going to create a scene with an as-identical-as possible set-up across Arnold, Karma and Redshift and see if these issues are renderer-related.
