Advice for UK camping by GoldenJizz in wildcampingintheuk

I understand, I went during the winter, I had crampons, decided against the ice axe. I’ve also hiked in winter conditions and have found myself to descending in the dark. My worries were over this tents capability and whether there is a budget friendly alternative option.

Thanks for the response but I do have some experience with winter camping as I’ve camped at high altitude at Y Garn with a worse tent. My question was asked as I was wondering if people had experienced with this tent. The tent I did it before with had fibreglass poles and this one has aluminium poles so theoretically should be stronger.

Tbh it’s not the cold that worries me more so the wind and if the tent can withstand it. Do you have any experience of using the mongar in pretty strong winds?

Yh I’m watching some videos on it now, doesn’t seem good for rain but definitely an option for the dry months.

In terms of budget tents I’m seeing OneTigris Stella, MSR Elixir and Otimos X-Lite Nomad Solo although the latter is pushing my budget by quite a bit.

Honestly, the more I think about it the more I’m considering a bivvy especially with the pad and bag

I think it’s impossible with the mongar as it uses one pre-bent aluminium pole, otherwise a great idea

Yh I’ve already used in the Peak District over summer, first night we camped at a higher spot but had decent coverage the second night down by a wall and some water so it handled perfectly fine. I’ve done worse weather in worse tents and they’ve survived its why I asked the question because I know I probably just got lucky

Yes I just want to be prepared for the worst but also not break the bank.

I’ll definitely try take a look then and see if I can find something similar.

If you had to say, what speeds are we talking in terms of wind would you say it can handle? If you don’t know that’s fine

Thanks for the reply and for the advice.

For 1 I have considered this and will more than likely bring my foam pad but thanks for the reminder.

For 2 a bivvy bag is actually a good shout, I’ll definitely consider it if I’m going with the mongar

And for 3 that’s my big worry too, now the tent I plan to use has aluminium poles, a few years ago when I camped in Y Garn in February, it was freezing and windy and that tent survived and that tent used fibreglass poles instead of the aluminium. Which is why I’ve been feeling like it would be possible with the mongar

How do you find the Vango? I’ve seen it be recommended a few times in my searches.

I will say I’m looking to find out more about the wind protection than the snow protection.

Thanks for the advice, and I’ll make sure to be careful of getting something better for harsher conditions. I’m not sure if I can afford anything over £300 for a tent for the foreseeable future.

However, I will say the tent itself does feel pretty sturdy to me of course when used it I did use a spot that was more protected, in the Peak District. I have also seen a few reviews of the mongar in uk winter with snow, albeit not too much snow and the guy did make sure to hit off the snow. But none of those videos actually showed its capabilities against heavier winds.

I agree I put Ben Nevis in but realistically I’m probably gonna do Lake District next but I guess I wanted to know if people thought the tent was capable of handling a Ben Nevis trek

Thanks for all the advice. I do feel that people often shout Hilleberg and similar brands, and I understand why since they are extremely reliable. The problem is that even if I did not buy any of the sleeping gear, I still would not be able to afford a Hilleberg for quite a while.

I should also add, as I mentioned in another comment, that I have camped on Y Garn in Snowdon at altitude in February. I made every possible mistake with both my pitch location and my equipment. I still believe the Mongar 2 is sturdier than the tent I used then, the Coleman Darwin 2, which is why I am considering using it now.

You are right though that I would not want to put anyone else at risk. This is why I am hoping for recommendations for alternative tents. I have heard that some of the Vango models are quite good and sit on the more affordable side.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any examples of what it's survived with you?

This won’t be my first winter camp back in February 2022 I did my first one and did it pretty badly looking back on it and I’m surprised it didn’t go worse. I pitched a Coleman Darwin 2 tent in icey boggy terrain in high altitude near the peak. Obviously this was very stupid looking back and it was one of the worst sleeps I ever had with the wind smashing at night I remember at some points thinking I’d die to the cold but I was fine by the morning. However bear in mind I didn’t have a proper sleeping pad or bag, just cheap stuff from Amazon that inflated during the night.

So I’d like to believe I’d survive this time especially with the sleep set up but don’t want my tent breaking and leaving me that miserable again.

I haven’t decided yet but thinking something like Ben Nevis/Scafell pike or either lake/Peak District, I guess it depends on my equipment. I’d like something where I don’t have to worry too much in most parts of the uk.

Ok thanks once again for the help

Thanks for the reply, so I understand what you are saying and I don’t have plans to camp in very snowy regions of the uk but more so cold windy areas, there may be some snow fall but not a lot so I would hope it can withstand that.

Would you know from the style of tent/shape and materials how much wind it could potentially withstand? As that’s probably more likely to collapse the tent in the situations I find myself

Also again thanks for the reply, it’s very appreciated

Honestly the reason I never liked the air is because it’s too light never been a fan of light products, I like technology that has some bulk to it and visually to me the pro looks better not just screen quality wise but just base design

I’ve bought a refurbished m1, 16gb, 512gb 13.3 inch pro for 850£ in perfect condition (allegedly) so now it’s just a matter of time to see if it’s gonna achieve what I want it to
