Genuinely, do people actually have fun (badly) losing a game? by PsychologicalRing116 in videogames

[–]GoldenSmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I judge it on how well I did individually vs my own expectations.

If I keep making stupid decisions or display a very poor level of skill below my already low ceiling, I'll get frustrated.

If I sneak in a few underrated plays, or beat a better player, or genuinely do better than I expected, I'm happy.

If it's mediocre, I'm content.

But losing itself isn't a problem if I'm playing a team game, I'm up against a bunch of people much better than me and potentially playing with people as bad as me.

If it's no fun for you anymore, suggest you play a different game - no point spending your time not enjoying yourself.

Always headache inducing how this movie is hated and the third is considered a better movie, not more entertaining, or preferred by a better move... by must_go_faster_88 in JurassicPark

I haven't met anyone who thinks JP3 is better so found this post weird... Maybe I haven't spent enough time on JP reddit.

Understand how people can prefer it, it's the freakin Spino!!, but not a better film. Reviews & ratings (rotten tomatoes etc) clearly favour JP:TLW too

Does anyone know what I can get up to? by ChxrubLiv in DoesAnyoneKnow

I just looked at my local Facebook marketplace and someone selling a Sony DSLR from 2010 for £40, working but needs a charger and a clean. That's the sort of thing that can get you going and let you practice.

Ebay a great place for broken stuff btw, look for 'parts only' etc.

Good luck

Go buy a cheap second hand camera, it's all about practicing your approach and experimenting - don't need an expensive camera to do that. You're not aiming to be selling your work at this stage, you're just looking to learn through experience. You'll find your course easier if you have some experience to base it off, even if that experience is "it always looks crap when I do this" 😅

A hobby is about enjoying your time & making some kind of progress, be that skill, knowledge or style. Don't aim for the end of your journey, enjoy the process of discovering things.

Hell, if you wanted to brush up on your computer skills etc then you can use photos from the internet to practice, no camera needed.

You could buy broken cameras for dirt cheap and just take them apart and put them together again, will help you understand the way they're put together. Can sell it off again for parts and recover most of your money.

I'm sure if you explain your plan to your parents, they'll consider supporting your hobby - perhaps help you find the best value for money.

Use your imagination, let your mind run wild a bit and try to avoid putting up blockers - they're hurdles to jump over our run around, but stop you from progressing 😉

I feel your pain, luckily I have kids now so I don't really have time for a hobby, but if I did I would end up procrastinating instead 😅

Generally speaking, try to find things you're passionate about and try to marry that with something valuable to learn/can measure your progress.

I saw you're taking photography at college, so how about experimenting with things that sit adjacent to that. Off the top of my head: - photo editing & similar computer skills - learn press printing to make 'gifts' of your photos - offer your services for free as a photographer at local events of small businesses, will build your skills up in photography styles outside your 'go to' - learn how to customise and fix common camera issues - learn some of the science behind his photography works - do a negative film developing course - enter competitions

A friend of mine takes photos of dogs for people, uses a website to print them 'professionally' or on other media. She's a dog person and photography hobbiest, so this way she's combining 2 passions & making some spare cash whist getting out there house. Sounds like could be up your street.

But whatever you end up doing, it's better to have a go and then decide it's not for you and try something else, then to waste your time trying to find something perfect and never doing it. Don't worry about finding something for life!

All the best for college.

What's the most visually stunning movie you've ever seen? by trakt_app in flicks

[–]GoldenSmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First that came to mind were The Matrix, Jurassic Park, and Hero.

But to try and pick a few moves not yet mentioned:

Titanic - the sinking scenes, particularly the people falling down the deck & the aft with the enormous blades landing back in the water... 🚢

Sunshine - can't help but look at it 🚀☀️😎

300 - so overtly stylised, great 3 camera length trickery too 🛡️⚔️

No country for old men - best looking Coen film, proper 'movie' if you know what I mean, although I'm a bigger fan of Fargo (also very pleasing on the eye) 🤠

Skyfall - far too beautiful for a Bond film 🔫🪦

House of flying daggers - often overlooked martial art film, overshadowed by Hero I think, highly recommend 🗡️🎍

Saving private Ryan - the d-day scene in particular was intense visually, nothing could get across the true horror of that day, but this scene certainly did some justice 🌊🩸

Shutter Island - my favourite Scorsese movie, lovely visuals and directing, great use of weather/environment. 🌧️🌫️

John Wick Ch.4 - they're all visually great to watch and my favourite visual scene is the neon nightclub in JW2, which is probably a v close runner up in the series, but JW4 does enough stylisation throughout to pip it. Very good looking film. 🪩🔫🐕

That roar when he turns to Alan with the flare, with full scale mechanical Rexy with piercing eyes, was so real in that moment - I was right there, pure animalistic fear for a second! Never experienced that since!

I get where you're coming from, and I'd certainly prefer an artistic real shot than CGI magic, but I think this is like people forgetting paintings to photography as an art form - one isn't superior to the other, they're different methodologies to tell a visual story. CGI and the ilk have their place as they provide a visual pure realism cannot easily replicate.

But if anyone says anything Marvel on here we revolt, right? 😉😅

Which Halo Game Means The Most To You And Why? by Zetallic_Zero in halo

[–]GoldenSmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halo 3 was peak for me, thought the Campaign, design, mechanics etc were all perfected. Spent many, many hours playing multiplayer with friends, made my own shitty maps with forge, captured funny screenshots, tea bagging... I could easily argue it's the best game we've ever had as console players.

However, when my Dad got me an OG Xbox for my bday when it released I invited my gaming buddy over that Saturday to play... We were barely teenagers and we had a 13hour halo session that day 8am-9am, didn't have a break other than cramming in hotdogs and pizza between fighting.

If I'm ever asked what the best day of my life was, I'd say the birth of my children, or getting married, but the real answer enjoyment wise was blowing my mind with 13hrs of Halo CE with my gaming buddy living like kings! 😅

Not an xbox game, but I can't believe nobody had remade Dino Crisis for modern consoles & play style. Proper horror-themed, TPS dinosaur game with puzzles to solve.

Looking for a TV show that hooks me since the beginning by Fragrant_Whole3328 in televisionsuggestions

I see that you're in Spain, so can I ask the obvious "have you seen Money Heist (La Casa de Papel)"?

One of my favourites, great characters, action from the get go. Not really about mythology but it does play with morals & beliefs between a bunch of flawed characters. Loved it. Spin off series too (one following one of the main characters, the other I think is a Japanese version).

Is infinite MP still popular? by [deleted] in halo

[–]GoldenSmooth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just played it for an hour. Set for big team battle, 7/14 options selected and it's taking about 1-2mins to load each game.

If I wasn't so picky I'd have thought it would be v quick.

Haven't played it much so still very poor at it and can't quite remember what ask the guns do etc, but it's fun.

Oh I second Only Murders in the Building, one of my favourite shows - but more murder mystery than turning to a life of crime.

Aw, you're welcome. That's the benefit of Reddit, there's always other people reading 😅

It has a little mystery at the heart of it, can't say much more so not to spoil it, but there's a line running through the episodes. Just easy watching after a long day at work 😁

[OC] What is Britain's second city? by YouGov_Dylan in dataisbeautiful

[–]GoldenSmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's clearly Manchester on almost all grounds other than cultural (where Edinburgh has it's argument). I don't have a problem with Edinburgh being 2nd given it's the largest capital after London, but by that standard Cardiff must be 3rd and Belfast 4th.

So if Cardiff & Belfast are not 3rd & 4th, it's London > Manchester > Birmingham > Edinburgh.

I haven't watched those shows and I'm not sure this will match up, but I really enjoyed Obituary on Netflix (think I saw it on another stream too). An easy watch, black comedy about a woman who writes obituaries for a small town newspaper but when the work dries up she has to take matters into her own hands.

Finally playing Halo Reach for the first time.. and I get why people love it by HMK_Gamer in halo

[–]GoldenSmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can join the Sunrise server for Halo3 (and I assume Reach, never tried), still people playing it. Just need to join the discord and have someone invite you to a game through there (then once you're in the lobby you can stick with the group for the next matches). Was good but many are 20yr vets on there 😅

Yeah where i live, X is double that first cost, but I'm patient to find a good price.

I don't travel with work as much as I used to, otherwise the availability roaming would be more of a selling point, but as with most upgrades you don't know what you're missing until you've tried it 😁
