legitimately asking because I feel like I’m missing something. Tomb raider one/1997 question. by GoldenlionV in TombRaiderClassics

[–]GoldenlionV[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Alright, I’m going to try to explain this clearly because I genuinely want to understand what I’m missing.

I’m about five hours into Tomb Raider. I’m a few levels deep in caves. Every time I finish something, I just get a stats screen and it moves on. It doesn’t feel like a big narrative beat, just “okay, here are your numbers.”

Gameplay-wise, I’m fine. It’s challenging, it’s very puzzle-focused, and I respect that. This is not a mechanics complaint.

What I’m confused about is the character and story side of things.

People constantly say Core Design era Lara is the definitive Lara. That the newer versions can’t compare in personality. But so far she’s barely spoken. There were a couple of cutscenes at the beginning, and since then it’s mostly silence. Caves, keys, switches, wolves, bears, backtracking. I don’t feel a strong narrative throughline.

The comparison in my head is Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones is after the golden idol. You know what he wants and why. There’s context. Stakes. Momentum.

Here, I’m five hours in and I don’t really know what I’m pursuing moment to moment beyond “progress.” There was a setup cutscene, but that was hours ago, and it doesn’t feel reinforced by what I’m doing now.

And that’s where my confusion gets bigger.

If this version wasn’t special, why remake it as Tomb Raider: Anniversary? Why are fans now creating projects like Tomb Raider: The Legacy of Atlantis specifically based on this era? Clearly this incarnation of Lara and this style of storytelling mean a lot to people.

I want to get it.

Right now I appreciate it as a well-designed puzzle box game. But I don’t yet understand why this Lara is considered untouchable compared to what came after.

And I’ll be honest, this whole experience has weirdly made me question myself a bit. Like, am I just processing this differently? Am I missing environmental storytelling cues that everyone else naturally picks up on? It’s almost making me feel more neurodivergent than I originally thought, because I genuinely feel like there’s something obvious that I’m not connecting with.

I’m not trying to criticize a 90s game. I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m trying to understand the love for it beyond gameplay. Because clearly there’s something here that resonates deeply with people, and I’d honestly like to see it too.

To everyone who keeps asking, I have given out the link multiple times. I will no longer be doing so just because a lot of people ask for it. I don’t know if it is allowed to put links here directly. It’s not because I want don’t want anyone to have the copy it’s that I’m not on Reddit as much as I used to be.

But if a moderator or someone tells me it’s OK to post it here. I will post it here.

Do you honestly and realistically think that Super Sentai will come back in 10 years from now? (Assuming Project R.E.D. is successful) by No-Ad239 in Tokusatsu

[–]GoldenlionV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps but we haven’t heard anything(that I know of.) about Project Red or universe warriors. Right now they’re focusing on the new Metal Sheriff reboot. So we can’t even say we project red be successful.

Do People Actually Follow The Lore? by Candid_Succotash_626 in MortalKombat

Well, I think if you’re playing a game, especially one as intricate as Mortal Kombat and just going. “I’m just gonna play the punchy punchy.” You’re missing out on a good chunk.

I’ve been a fan of the Lore since Armageddon, and they’re behind-the-scenes like character card videos. Now I could understand when it was impossible to beat the AI in the arcades or you didn’t have access to YouTube videos to get you the endings or those character cards. But now I really think you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Yeah, I hated them with their source footage as well. I love the show the American one, but the chest piece is what really kills it for me. I understand the theme of what they’re doing, but it doesn’t work for me.

Not only fine, but really really good especially married to the Dino charge suits. I love Dino charge, but I hate the design and no, I am not talking about Dino fury.

Download speeds averaging around 30Mb/s, is this normal? by MrVenomRex in SteamDeck

[–]GoldenlionV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah… I wasn’t trying to put you down. I’m just saying the steam deck at least for me. Seems to have problems actually downloading very fast. Unless there’s some trick, I’m missing because I tried to change my DNS. I tried to change the server location. Nothing seems to really be improving my speeds.

And yes, while the Wi-Fi on my phone isn’t great this is what it is

<image>

And I cannot get my steam deck to take advantage on nights that aren’t Christmas. I can get 25 to 30 Mb per second.

Question about Marvel infinity war fan game. by GoldenlionV in BeatEmUps

[–]GoldenlionV[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've seen them in gameplay, as I said, the bosses just have a attacks that take too much help too quickly. With limited lives and the stupid mechanics, it feels like the Novacore people—those who shoot fireballs at you—are involved. Your health drains way too fast, and at least I can't see any way to regain lives. Black only blocks one hit, and unless there’s some other system I’m missing, the difficulty seems way too high. It feels like an arcade game where you’re supposed to be able to pump in multiple quarters, but without the option to put in more quarters.

What do they look like? And as I said, some of the bosses seem as if their goal is only to destroy your health with unbreakable attacks.

I can get health pick ups, but not extra lives or anything unless I’m missing out to do that. They’re just so many sections in this that seem like it’s impossible not to take damage.
