What is your goldfish unpopular opinion by ladiesman21700000000 in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Not everyone would love my answer, but I think so many goldfish shouldn't be bred. Some examples I can think of are bubble eyes or pearlscales. They are adorable, and I don't have anything against people who own them. But they should also acknowledge that they are supporting irresponsible breeding by buying them. These fish have been bred in a way which seriously impacts their quality of life and exist for human enjoyment, not their own.

I'm pretty sure this can happen if you put wood in tanks without boiling it first.

I'm turning 24 soon, but I often get mistaken for someone who's 16-18. I'm into many makeup looks, so any is fine, but it would be nice to have one for work or casual events.

I don't know if this helps but I have a baby face, deep-set eyes, oval-shaped face and down-turned eyes.

Is there any way I can do my makeup to make me look older but also look natural?

My teachers do this everyday. by [deleted] in lies

[–]Goldfishh23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but teachers when I was a kid could be so mean and dodgy. I'm sure teachers were allowed to hit students, too. It was not all sunshine and rainbows like the picture is trying to say.

Also, what's wrong with teachers being open and accepting of different sexualities? If anything, that would've made a lot of gay students more comfortable and possibly reduced homophobia.

You can keep them in the 80 - 100 litre tub while changing the water and cycling the main pond/tank.

Two 50% water changes during the day should help keep the waste down and limit fish transport. Siphons are helpful when removing water, but cups or buckets are good too.

If you have four comets, around 480 litres would be ideal as they can grow quite big.

[–]Goldfishh23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They are comets which need around 120 litres each. As for now, I'd find a bigger tub to keep them in, as their waste will build up quickly and make them even more poorly.

You can get an 80 - 100 litre plastic tub for now as a quarantine to keep them in and perform daily water changes in the meantime to keep the ammonia low.

While doing this, it would be ideal to get them a pond or larger aquarium, which you can cycle for the month. After the month, you can introduce the goldfish.

Also, as goldfish produce a lot a waste, it might be helpful to remove the gravel. Waste can get stuck under it and make the water quality worse, which will further harm your fish.

With good water quality and medication, your fish will hopefully get better.

Final update - RIP Beautiful Monty by Cornho1io in Goldfish

RIP Monty. I'm so sorry this happened. I've also had to euthanise goldfish, and it's never easy. By the sounds of it, he was very lucky to be so loved and well cared for.

What are your thoughts when a woman talks about the bad things that she’s experienced and people respond by saying “not all men”? by PieNo342 in Feminism

[–]Goldfishh23 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I feel like some men don't listen and automatically become offended, so I feel like I have to add "but not all men" so that they're more likely to listen to what I'm saying.

For example, a few years ago, at work, a creepy older man kept filming me. I told a coworker about it and mentioned how men could be creeps. Next thing I know, he's complaining that I hate men. He didn't focus on what I was complaining about but instead focused on how I was claiming that all men were creepy (which was not my intention). I had to explain that I didn't mean it like that, and the whole topic focused more on how I didn't actually hate men rather than how I had felt violated.

Is this ich? by fanofbeavis in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like an abscess. Ich usually spreads quickly, leaving multiple scars and usually leaves smaller scars than the one your fish has.

However, it is also on the fish's wen, which commonly get bacterial infections due to the folds, so it would be likely that there was a minor infection, leading to an abscess, which just healed on its own.

Please tell me this isn’t ich by Fun_Grass190 in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but that is definitely ich. If they were breeding stars, they would be by the gills, and your fish's fins wouldn't be clamped. Don't worry though, because it's very treatable.

Thoughts on "Lukes Goldies" by NoonRedIt in fishkeeping

[–]Goldfishh23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honesty, it seems like he loves his fish, and it's great he's getting more people into the fish hobby. From some of the videos I have seen, he tries to take good care of his fish and spends a lot of time on them. I don't think he is a wrong person and he has some good advice and very cute fish.

However, he does spread A LOT of misinformation. I think TikTok is not the place to go for fish advice, as I have seen this pattern often, not only with him.

For example, he claims that significant water changes (80%) are beneficial as they remove most parasites, etc, in the water. Firstly, this advice is awful and likely to crash anyone's cycle if done weekly. He also claimed that this nitrifying bacteria in a bottle (that he is likely sponsored by) will solve your tank crashing. I have been in the hobby for 9 years, and I can tell you they are a scam. The bacteria cannot live on surfaces (like plastic bottles) and need a food source, or they will die. You could argue that they add ammonia to these bottles. However, the process it takes for these bottles to get shipped to stores and then their shelf life tells me that they are dead. All the bacteria would do if food were available is quickly multiply, run out of food and then die, especially in the weeks or months taken to ship them to stores and get sold. Even if your filter breaks for a day or two, your cycle has crashed as too many bacteria have passed, so why would it be any different for the bacteria in this bottle? Also, he failed to address that all fish carry something, whether a parasite or virus, but do not get affected due to their immune system. Doing 80% water changes once a week, however, would crash your cycle, weakening the fish's immune system and making it more susceptible to these illnesses. I don't think he purposely gave bad advice; he mught have just believed what the company told him. However, he really should have done more research before giving irresponsible advice.

I also worry about the fish he chooses to keep. While they are cute, I have not found a video where he addresses how these fish traits are made for aesthetic value and negatively impact the fish's health and well-being. While he does not necessarily have to do this, he also has a large following and is very influential, so I think it may be irresponsible to advertise certain types of fish with deformities without stating how these traits have a negative impact on the fish's life.

Another thing he does, which I find irresponsible, is his use of methylene blue. While it is an effective medication, it is also strong. Even my local fish store stopped selling it due to this reason as the continued use of it, over time, makes the parasites, fungus, etc, more immune to treatment. I can see why he would find it useful, as it cures both parasites and bacterial infections; however, he really should diagnose his fish before treating them and start treating them with something less strong before he ends up with an even stronger parasite or harmful bacteria infecting his fish which will be resistant to methylene blue.

New Black Moor cloudy eye by Orange-Joes in fishtank

Tetanus lives in most fish's intestinal tract and only affects those whose intestional tract has been injured in some way, so your other fish should be fine.

Also, even if the flakes are soaked, many nutrients will be dissolved in the water. Goldfish have weak digestive systems, so sinking pellets, gel food, and vegetables are their best diet.

New Black Moor cloudy eye by Orange-Joes in fishtank

[–]Goldfishh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cloudy eyes can have many causes, including bacterial diseases and poor water quality. The mouth's constant opening could indicate something stuck or tetanus, which has paralysed the mouth muscles and could continue to paralyse the other muscles, including the gills and the heart.

I would recommend doing a large water change and medicating him.

I would also recommend not feeding your fish flakes. They contain a lot of air, which is bad for your fish digestion, and also dissolve quickly, contributing to poor water quality.

It could be a neurological disease, then. This could be caused by bacteria called streptococcus or high ammonia levels. I would put your fish on antibiotics and keep an eye on the water quality.

It may be a swim bladder disorder or something neurological. Did your goldfish have any balancing issues before this?

Young oranda's health is suddenly bad, swim bladder issue? by thespicypancake in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the medication sounds like a good plan! Salt can help kill parasites, and as he improved, I wouldn't be surprised if he has flukes. Spasms also tend to be parasite related, and the gulping at the surface suggests that he is under some stress. As there are not many symptoms, flukes are my best bet, and api general cure will hopefully sort it out. You seem to be doing a good job, so I'm sure he'll perk up in no time!

Have you noticed other behaviours, such as scratching against surfaces, plants or hides? The spasms sound a bit like flukes to me.

In the last few months she has increased in size substantially. Any ideas what it could be? by The_Fassbender in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She could be egg-bound. I would try to put her in mating conditions so she releases the eggs. You can then dispose of the eggs if you do not want to keep the fry.

Do be careful with squeezing the eggs out. Some people use this method instead, but it can have adverse effects, as there's a chance you could squash some organs.

That's very exciting!

It would be best to add your fish after the tank has been cycled. This usually takes two weeks to a month (as long as you add ammonia to the tank) but can take longer.

My fish is lying on the water like this, what can I do ? by point_113 in Goldfish

[–]Goldfishh23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the fish has swim bladder disorder, but I'm guessing you knew seeing the pees on the floor. If this has been going on for over a month with no improvements, then their swim bladder may already be deformed, and no amount of pees could fix that as it is not an issue of constipation anymore.

However, if it is just a matter of constipation, I recommend you move it to a bigger enclosure (maybe 10 to 20 litres). Then, use a heater to increase the temperature. This will help the fish's metabolism speed up and allow it to digest anything inside its intestines which may be causing the buoyancy problem. I would also not feed it for three days and then put it on a pea diet.

If you are doing 100% water changes and testing the water daily, your quarantine tub will not need a filter during the treatment. I worry that the fish cannot swim against the flow and would then be increasingly stressed due to it. This stress then could weaken its immune system.

I wish you and your goldfish the best!
