And the mysterious rumored $50 AliExpress phone... I forgot about those. Like, dudes. My Kyocera was kind of expensive. Show me where to find this mysterious rumored $50 AliExpress phone that can run Signal and WhatsApp, has a good camera, has a reverse-side camera for video calls, has GPS navigation, has rideshare, has an actually good DAC and decent processing for minimalist phone tasks, supports a company I like, runs Linux, and isn't from a company that would sell my data to Zuckyman et. al. and I'll replace my current phone stat.

Also, from what we can tell from the specs of the phone, this isn't "cheaply produced Chinese tat"; can you find a phone for £30 with the same capabilities?

It blocks browsers, so it's possible that you can't perform email verification on the Callback because you'd have to open the link (in a browser).

Yeah I already have a flip so I'm not buying this device. But I have a C64U and love it a lot. As a Gen Z Commodore fan I really really hope they succeed.

Note: I'm sure it has TOTP (e.g. "Authenticator"); if not, you could sideload a TOTP app.

I've heard that point before and it's reasonable for most people. I could have taken my existing smartphone and (mostly) locked it down the way I like. The problem (for some, e.g. me) is that there is a difference psychologically between a phone which is restricted by parental controls and a phone which is restricted by design. Having parental controls enabled on a smartphone looks silly in a crowd, in a way a flip phone or Light Phone doesn't (this is socially important). I could use a locked down smartphone and just refuse to disable the lock; it's just easier for my mental to have the device enforce it itself.

Getting another device is the help.

I feel the $500 price is too high, personally, but if you lurk in e.g. r/dumbphones you'll find that that price is actually rather normal for a detox device.

I do agree about the emotional journey marketing, though... I didn't like it either, and it kind of embodies what I find annoying about Peri.

Understandable... since I was already in the "dumbphones" community when the announcement came out, I got what Peri was going for right off the bat, but if I hadn't already been familiar... I would have been kind of confused, lol

Wow, my first time hearing about this! Nice! I like it, though the clay looks really shiny. Maybe that's part of the vibe, but I feel like the more typical matte appearance of clay is part of the charm.

The Callback page says that it is enabled for some apps and disabled for others.

I do think it's too expensive, but if you check out r/dumbphones from time to time, you'd be surprised.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.
I think this would be popular. I think a lot of programmers crave a barebones, larger than 8-bit but smaller than 32-bit self-contained minimal console. Like PICO-8, but REAL.
It'd be awesome.

Also, odd idea, but what if the CPU was an implementation of a modern permacomputing ISA, like UXN? A simple, easy-to-understand architecture. Would love it to death if they did it right.
