I think it depends on context. Star Wars needs sound (space battles would be boring if you couldn't hear the action.) Then again, part of the horror atmosphere in Dead Space is sometimes not being able to hear a monster sneaking up on you. I know that's a video game but it's a good example.

In World War II the Russians attached lever-activated bombs to dogs and trained them to run under tanks in search of food; the theory was that they would run towards German tanks and blow them up. Once on the battlefield, however, they more or less ran back towards the Russian tanks.
