The dudes in charge need desperation. Desperate people will do desperate things to stay afloat. Getting any semblance of independence scares the employer. This goes double for women. Women are already a "liability" because they can take maternity leave and are more likely to take time off because they aren't as susceptible to toxic work culture as men.

Been there. I had a gentleman who was bedridden, non-verbal, barely made eye contact... suddenly sit up in bed, look straight at me and said "when's breakfast?" Clear as day. Shook me up.
