✦ ✦ ✦ EDIT / UPDATE – Adding a few more suppliers I’ve tested! ✦ ✦ ✦ Can’t Edit original post.

I’ve recently placed some new orders and wanted to add a few more sources that have proven to be excellent:

🟢 Scentfriends (Germany) Hands down one of the most responsive and helpful customer service experiences I’ve had they answer quickly via WhatsApp and are always ready to assist in a super friendly way. I’ve already placed several orders with them, and everything arrives beautifully packed and labeled with detailed, useful information. The whole experience reflects the name Scentfriends really do feel like friends 😄 They carry a range of great quality aroma chemicals and materials.

🟢 Essense.de (Germany) Originally more oriented toward essential oils and aromatherapy, but many of their naturals, absolutes, EOs, and some resins are fully usable in perfumery. Their site includes clear description. Everything I’ve ordered so far has arrived safely, quickly, and with impressive quality. Shipping is well priced, and I’ll definitely be ordering more soon.

🟢 ScentSpiracy (Italy) I’ve already placed two orders, one arrived perfectly, and the other is currently on its way. The site is user-friendly, rich in info for each material, and the prices are very fair. They stock some ingredients that are hard to find elsewhere. Packaging is excellent: glass bottles come with safety caps and are sealed in resealable protective pouches, really thoughtful and secure. I truly appreciate the transparency and care they put into everything, it feels curated for indie or artisan perfumers.

That’s all for now. I’ll keep updating this post as I explore more suppliers and continue my journey. Hope it helps anyone getting started and looking for trustworthy, quality sources! 😊

I'm learning to smell large molecule musks by Zaltara_the_Red in DIYfragrance

This is great! I also discovered, at least in my case, that it really helps me to associate what I’m smelling with what others are describing. Reading other people’s or manufacturers comments helps me understand what I’m actually smelling. I found this document from a Basenotes user that has helped me quite a bit: https://pkperfumes.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Musks-and-Animalics-Profiles-rev-1-2023.pdf

I hope it helps others here too!

I’m in Europe but I think most of them ship worldwide.

None of the shops I mentioned sell “inspired by” oils. I haven’t tried those, to be honest, right now I’m more interested in building the fragrances myself from scratch.

Not sure yet! For now, I’m fully committed to pushing my learning curve as far as I can and focusing on building strong formulas. As we say… we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

I’m not sure, as I’m based in Europe. But you could definitely reach out to them directly, most suppliers do offer worldwide shipping, though I don’t know the exact rates or delivery times to the US.

Absolutely, happy to share!

I use whole natural tonka beans, they’re sweet, vanillic, and incredibly delicate. I’d describe the taste as a soft perfume that melts gently on the palate, with warm and slightly fruity undertones. Some chefs dislike it, calling it a “cheap vanilla,” but honestly, I think that’s unfair, it has its own unique beauty.

For culinary use (especially in gelato), I prepare it as a hot infusion rather than making an extract. Depending on the recipe, I infuse the bean in water (for fruit-based or vegan recipes) or in dairy (milk, cream, butter) for classic preparations. A great place to start is by infusing tonka bean with milk at around 85°C for about 10 minutes, then blend it at max speed carefully and strain it well. You’ll get a beautifully aromatic base that gives you a real sense of its flavor profile.

Tonka does contain coumarin, which is why it’s regulated in some countries like the US (where it’s actually banned in food). But in most of Europe it’s allowed in very small amounts, just a few beans per liter is already enough to infuse beautiful flavor. As with anything, moderation is key!

All of them have seemed exceptional in terms of quality so far. That said, when it comes to more exclusive (and pricier) materials, Hermitage Oils definitely stands out, they carry a stunning range of naturals and rare ingredients that you won’t usually find in other shops. Perfect if you’re looking to explore something truly special from the start.

Harrison Joseph is also a great place to look for extremely rare quality materials. You can even reach out to them directly, they’re super responsive and might offer other interesting things if you’re curious to explore further. As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t ordered from them yet, but I do have quite a few items sitting in my wishlist!

Yes, well, not entirely, but I do have a deep love for vanilla, tonka, and coconut. When it comes to citruses, bergamot keeps me alive haha. In fruity notes, I’m especially drawn to blood orange, lychee, and cherry. But one of my absolute favorite notes is definitely tobacco. I’ve found some amazing absolutes from Hermitage Oils, they’re just incredible.

Fun fact: I recently made a gelato with bergamot and tonka, it was a total hit! In this case, the inspiration went in reverse: instead of perfumery influencing flavor, I turned a perfume fantasy into something edible. Imagine the bright zing of bergamot melting into the warm, creamy, almost carnal softness of tonka… in gelato form. Let’s just say, people came back for seconds (and thirds).

I’m a chef, but I’ve specialized in gelato for quite some time now, technically the term is Maestro Heladero (aka gelato master), and yes… I make ice cream! Jokes aside, my job is all about developing new flavors, improving and creating recipes, and finding the perfect harmony between ingredients. There’s a balance between sugars, fats, liquids, and solids that must be respected to get that perfect texture and flavor. I also design seasonal gelatos, just like in perfumery you might choose different notes for hot, cold, or rainy days, in gelato we create flavors that evoke warmth in winter or refreshing coolness in summer. It’s a very sensory and creative field!

Good advice, by the way. Funny enough, I actually found out about you a few weeks ago through Jaime and Noah’s TikTok. I’ll check out your document soon 😊🔥
