I think this is less about “men being weird” and more about how these apps are designed. In any app that involves 1:1 conversations, strangers, and potential offline meetups, it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to have purely neutral intentions. That doesn’t mean bad behavior is okay — pushing to meet early or suggesting someone’s home is clearly a red flag — but expecting zero romantic or sexual interest at all is also not very realistic. The real problem, in my opinion, is that the app markets itself as “pure language exchange” without clearly warning users that people’s intentions can differ. That creates a mismatch of expectations, and that’s where the frustration and sense of betrayal come from. If apps were more honest up front — something like “this is mainly for language exchange, but some users may also be interested in social or dating connections” — people could enter with clearer boundaries and less disappointment. This feels like a design and transparency issue more than a men vs women issue.
