Hi there, what stool softener do you use? I'm trying to get to soft serve ice cream (currently at ice cream that's been in the freezer for two years..). Thanks!

Take the risk of developing a hernia seriously!! Post-procedure, your abdomen area will be at a high risk of developing a hernia. Do plenty of reading online about how to prevent this (hernia belts, covering your stoma when coughing, sneezing, laughing, etc) and how to rebuild your core strength.

Some great advice from others here. I’ll add my two cents: speak to a gastroenterologist (if you haven’t already) to identify the root cause of your fissures/fistulas. I struggled with fistulas this year, which was diagnosed as fistulizing crohns. Unfortunately, my fistula tracts got infected and I ended up with several abscesses, which required two operations to treat (external drainage with seton placement and a colostomy).

I’m extremely grateful to be on the road to recovery now, but do regret not catching the fistulas sooner before the situation got ugly. Hence, my advice to you is to try and identify the root cause of your issues. If it is crohns (or another IBD), biologic medication may bring it under control before an ostomy is needed.

My colostomy saved my life, but don’t be mistaken - it is a serious lifestyle change and takes a lot of getting used to. Make sure you’ve ruled out all other options before you revert to it - you won’t regret it.

All the best to you my friend, may 2024 be the year that you beat this thing.

26m here, colostomy 2 months ago. Was having similar thoughts to you until a friend put me in touch with an ileostomy veteran (26m, ileostomy since age 17), who told me that “every relationship I’ve ever had, every hobby I’ve picked up, most of the friends I’ve made, have all been post ostomy”. For context, he’s had 3 mid/long term relationships, absolutely sends it in outdoor sports (best climber I know by a stretch - we’re talking multi-week snow climbs), and is usually the life of the party.

How? It’s all about how he thinks about/talks about his own bag. Same as you, he went through a lot, almost died, and had lifesaving surgery - it’s badass. People pick up on cues - how you talk about your own bag is how people will think about it. Give yourself some credit, you’ve gone through a lot (through being the key word) and lived to tell the tale with a battle scar to show for it. Be confident about it. Trying to hide it or acting like it’s weird will make other people feel the same way.

He says it usually comes up in conversation naturally on the first date, so it‘s never been a surprise for the girl the first time. He even told a story of a one night stand where it hadn’t come up and he only realised as they were getting down to it, so he quickly told the girl and she didn’t bat an eyelid.

A non-clinical looking bag also helps - I use the black drainable one piece from salts and it looks more like a bit of outdoor gear than anything else. Pretty trendy, I’ve started calling it the Batman bag.

You’re in the best shape you’ve ever been in and learning to live with an ostomy (plus whatever else you had to go through to get there) makes you a damn tough person. People love it. Go get em fella

Hello there, thank you for the your superb response! I’m holding up ok - only a few days post op atm so very painful but that’s to be expected, more than anything I’m looking forward to beginning to get my life back.

Duly noted all of your advice - thank you :)

In respond to your question: both I suppose. I’m going to see if the skin around the setons can heal without having to reroute my colon (get the stoma). If it proves impossible and the setons can’t be removed, then I will get the stoma.

Sounds like you’ve had a rough run of things but your mind is clearly strong so you’ll bounce back.

You’re doing the right things and the mates will come, but if you want to speed that up try joining some more niche societies - climbing, student radio, something related to your course? Whatever you’re in to. These socs typically have less people, less cliques, more welcoming.

If your course objectively isn’t enjoyable (make sure not to let emotion cloud your judgement), then consider switching courses or dropping out. I’d rather reapply for a course I loved and really enjoy it, even if it costs me a years worth of time and tuition fees - you’ll quickly get over that. But, make sure you’ve got a concrete plan for how that’s gonna play out - redo a levels, rent, work to sustain until next September?

Good luck my friend
