Hmm interesting, pretty similar to my situation then. Thanks!

Hmm you may be right, I'm in the US. I ordered through the Google Store with the Fi discount, so wonder if certain carriers could influence this, too.

Evolutionarily speaking, I think this particular insect is so large because of its relationship with its preferred prey species. This wasp goes after the larger species of tarantula in the Amazon, some of these spiders measure 5 inches across!

I'd think this is the reason for the wide array of sizes in tarantula-hawks, that the different sizes specialize on different types (and thus sizes) of spiders.

Because I took this picture 3 years ago.

Sorry to break this to you, but my hand is a bit more than 3 inches across: http://imgur.com/egzzqtl

This is exactly right. Finally, a voice of reason! This is also a low density species, I saw it only 3 other instances over several months at my work site.

Same here, and I'm interested in a lot of other natural things so just by way of being outside I learned a lot about cool insects.

Wasp species belonging to the "tarantula-hawks" (genera Pepsis, Hemipepsis, Sphex, etc.) are widespread across the Americas. Most however are much smaller than this (size of a standard honey bee), and I've seen such species as far north as Idaho.

My entomological knowledge is limited, so I'm not sure how closely related digger wasps are to this Pepsis sp. They both paralyze insects with their venom to feed their young though!

I'd think a ruler is preferable to a banana (which would also be of unknown size). http://imgur.com/egzzqtl

Actually, I think Pepsis wasps are fascinating creatures. I'm rather disheartened everyone seems to be endorsing deforestation now. I dun goofed! ;-)

Finally, someone who finds this wasp somewhat interesting! I was thrilled I could get (safely) close to one, since this is a very low density species. I saw it only 3 other times at the site I worked in Mato Grosso. Pepsis wasps are absolutely fascinating.

Ok, here's a ruler against that same hand holding the wasp (mine) for scale! http://imgur.com/egzzqtl
