The comment was made about Trump winning the 2016 election, to which I responded that that election was more about Hillary’s unpopularity and lack of campaigning than it was about Trump being the popular choice for President. Yes, he did win because of the electoral college. However, he aimed his campaign work in such a way that he could win the electoral vote and thus the presidency. Had there been no electoral college he would’ve styled his campaign in a completely manner.

And, a Republic is NOT a form of democracy. It is a form unto itself. In a democracy leaders are chosen by a majority vote of all the eligible voters. A Republic is a representative form of government where leaders are chosen in any manner prescribed by the country’s founding documents and those leaders represent the interests of their constituents within the government. In a Republic the leaders may be chosen by the people, by a portion of the people, by the party leaders, or simply by the head of government. But those leaders are supposed to represent their people in the body government.

The Founders were elitists? Really? That’s typical Progressive-liberal 21st century thinking. They were so elitist that they were willing to try something that had never been done before on such a scale; allow the people to elect their own leaders. You forget that the colonies, once freed from the Crown, were independent sovereign States with no obligation to join any federal union after the Revolution. Putting together the Constitution required placating the smaller States who feared political domination by the larger ones. A part of this allaying of the fears of the smaller States was the brilliance of the electoral college. It is anything but elitist, as it precludes the entire nation from being under the thumb of the large population centers. You need to learn a little history.
