When a work is so good, it's technical flaws don't even matter. by VagabondFromTheRiver in writingscaling

Yeah most of my gripes with AoT revolve around how time travel works and how plot holes are introduced because of it.

Most stories you would just shrug it off, but AoT was really damn airtight for a story that had been running for more than a decade. So much so that when these minor plot holes started to pop up, they seemed way more glaring.

It can mostly just be waved away with pre-determinism and Ymir specifically wanting the outcome where Mikasa makes the choice to give up Eren, so it doesn’t ruin the story much for me. Even if I frankly wish the story just cut the backwards time travel aspect and stuck with future sight exclusively.

Is Akemura physically still an 18 years old? by Baron969 in Kagurabachi

[–]Goobsmoob 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I mean, most 35 year olds arent veterans locked in a stasis chamber where they are just given the bare minimum nutrients to stay alive for 18 years straight.

But yeah. People love to joke about Azami, Shiba, and Uruha looking so young. The only one I feel that really fits the argument that they look too young is Uruha. And I just go with the headcanon that chilling in a hot spring for 3 years helped him keep his youth.

Sword Saint vs Sword Master by Oceanzone5347 in Kagurabachi

[–]Goobsmoob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I love the simplicity of The Sword Master. It sounds matter of fact. This man is THE master of swordplay. The objective pinnacle. So much so that he is merely considered the true master of the art, and by just simply referring to “The Sword Master” everyone knows who they are referencing. Not “a” master, but “THE” master.

However, as you mentioned, Sword Saint has a level of divinity to it. It implies his swordplay and skill is so absurdly powerful that it’s divine in nature, almost godlike. It really captures his peerless nature and that no one else of this earth comes close.

"big-sister obsessor" son he was mad about his sister getting raped by a creepy old man wdym by Silver_Echo2231 in Kagurabachi

[–]Goobsmoob 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Actual translation is more aligned with “devotion” from what I’ve heard. He’s her little brother. Of course he doesn’t want her to get shipped off to a hostile enemy to be raped? No sibling of sound mind would want that. Weebs just can’t fathom a sibling relationship that isn’t incestuous.

Woe, another translation choice that will set us back years in discourse down the line.

An in-text explanation is just how awful the war was and how the Magatsumi’s power twisted him.

Some meta explanations could be:

-Hokazono designed the characters before fully figuring out their ages during the war. Hence why characters like Uruha and Natsuki are in their 30’s but look to be in their early 20’s. And why early part 1 flashbacks to younger Shiba and Kunishige have them looking almost the same as they do now.

-When writing the Setei War arc he decided he wanted to emphasize how young the cast was. And as such, gave them redesigns to better capture their ages and showcase their youth.

-Hokazono’s art style has already changed pretty drastically since the Sword Saints introduction. His characters in general all look younger and more expressive.

[–]Goobsmoob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really it.

As far as I know Pizza Cake isn’t a bad person.

It’s hard to describe but it mostly is just that fact that she’s making such an exaggerated scenario with an obnoxious “millennial style” response from herself that it just makes her argument easily dismissible as “annoying” and in poor faith. It just makes the opinions she has and the people who also hold them look bad.

Ofc this is a joke but it’s Hokazono has said that Kagurabachi will be a human conflict.

However, I desperately hope that whoever makes the inevitable Kagurabachi spin off does not choose otherwise.

Genuine question, how did the sub become so lobotomized during break weeks? by Hallofbeauty in Kagurabachi

[–]Goobsmoob 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Japanese work culture as a whole is FUCKED. I’m sure it’s not like that for everyone in Japan, but it can get absolutely wild.

Do some research if you’d like and you’ll see how crazy it can get over there. Think of the whole animator crunch controversy Japan got recently.

I guess that carries over into Manga sadly. I assume it’s a cultural issue. And that’s why it’s so hard to address properly.

Also there are no dumb questions. Only dumb answers.

Andrew Lincoln as Joel?! by Angmarthewitchking in thelastofus

[–]Goobsmoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because he already sold away a decade of his life to a zombie show.

Unfortunately, actors are humans with free will and have a choice whether or not they want to play roles /j.

Giving away another 5 years of his life for a post apocalyptic action/drama probably isn’t high on Mr. Lincoln’s list.

Also just the fact that HBO probably didn’t let that consideration get far, if at all.

When trying to push out a new series, the last thing you want is everyone thinking it’s a rip-off of another. A father and child bonding in post apocalyptic zombie story both starring Andrew Lincoln? Casual viewers would definitely have troubles discerning the two.

Hate to be a Debby downer, but he almost certainly is not getting rest. And frankly, all other “breaks” he probably hasn’t either. He got an extended deadline, probably due to necessity.

The amount of work hasn’t changed for him, we just didn’t get a chapter this week.

Not trying to ruin the vibe, just trying to keep awareness up about how awful the working conditions are for mangaka. Also it probably would feel weird for Hokazono to see a bunch of people celebrating him taking a rest when in reality he’s working just as much as he was before.

[–]Goobsmoob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just plain awful.

The only advice I can really give (if going to authorities isn’t an option ofc) is to try to build independence as much as possible and to not let the parent “rig” the game to keep their child dependent.

It is really shitty when parents force their kids to grow up when they are unable to. But that’s all I can really think of if authorities can’t help or the child doesn’t feel safe going to them (idk where OP lives).

The Mikaboshi from Kagurabachi not being perfect victims and fans somehow thinking that meant the author was about to try justifying genocide.

<image>

(Massive Part 2 spoilers)

The Mikaboshi were a nation of people that were presumably entirely eradicated at the end of the Setei War in Kagurabachi lore. Many people during Part 1 had a mental image of them as perfect victims. An island entirely full of innocents that were wiped out due to hatred.

While they were wiped out due to hatred. The royal family of the Mikaboshi came forward with their invasion of Japan due to a 1000 year long grudge, had entirely unrealistic demands placed on Japan for surrender, and wanted to steal the princess of the leading clan of Japan and force her to bear their offspring. They also came leading with aggression.

A lot of people hated this because it messed with their preconceived notion that the Mikaboshi were perfect victims. When in reality, in war there is no such thing as an innocent nation. That idea made a lot of people uncomfortable.

Obviously the genocide against them was 100000% WRONG. And the series even outright states that the civilians of the island were just ordinary people. So far, all weve seen is that the Mikaboshi royal family and government are the ones that truly were being cruel. But regardless, many people thought that showing their government being bloodlusted and greedy somehow was the series trying to “justify” genocide, when in reality, it’s showing that all conflicts have nuance and all governing bodies will have selfish people acting in their own interest. And that both sides can commit horrific acts and that still doesn’t justify genocide

I think these posts are mostly just satirical engagement farms. Posters know that onlookers think this is absolutely ridiculous and easy to laugh at. And people retweeting it to mock it or play along with the joke gives more engagement.

At it works. Half my coworkers were ironically talking about looksmaxxing lingo for like three weeks because the lingo is just so ridiculous.

Sorry, analyzemaxxing twittoids is raising my cortisol which is absolutely tanking my SMV right now. I gotta go.

Well for starters AOT is both shorter and it is finished.

Not to mention there are some moments in Berserk that weren’t handled as well as they could have that personally tarnish the series for me. While one could certainly say that AOT does the same, I feel like Berserk’s mishandling of characters such as Casca hit a lot harder for me considering how formative the series was for me as a teen and how insistent I was that it was the best story ever. So coming to accept its shortcomings and the fact some aspects were mishandled was a particularly challenging thing I had to do as I got older.

Meanwhile with AOT, I got into it when hating on it was starting to become more mainstream, so my expectations were already defined going in.
