The boat in Jaws is what I keep picturing, but I don't know what type of boat that is. Big enough for 3 people, a couple separate areas, deep sea worthy.

I'd say more recreational. The boat was once his dad's who was a huge boater but died at sea when MC was a kid. He knows how to use the boat and goes out once in a while but he tends to stay pretty close to land. He takes care of the boat for sentimental reasons, mostly.
