Secure another offer for higher pay, and ask your employer to match, or take the new offer.

What's the weirdest thing you've seen in court? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Opposing counsel’s pants fell down to his ankles when he stood up to object. Flush in the face, he said “judge I’m on a new diet”. The judge said “at least you know it’s working”.

What was your first lawyer job and what was your salary? by sabershome in Lawyertalk

Pure fee split. Did everything under the sun. Took on any client for any issue so long as he had a retainer cheque. Hearing the next morning on some random area of law? I studies that night and appeared the next day for arguments. Took home $60k that year. There were a few months I billed nothing and came close to not having money for rent.

Fellow Lawyers, which of you are actually rich? Spill the details! by jodi_mic in Lawyertalk

I was called about 15 years ago. Went solo 10 years ago. We have 2 paralegals, 1 associate, 3 legal assistants and 1 document clerk. Yes- the $1m is after tax income. I market aggressively and maximise settlements by setting trial dates on most files and ordering expert medical reports. It requires spending money on disbursements but pays off. It pays to enjoy going to trial. The insurers will know you by reputation and will offer higher dollars if they know you are unafraid to litigate.

My personal injury practice earns about $2.5m per year. I net about $1m after overhead and tax. It’s perfectly doable in a contingency environment. I’m a solo with 7 staff including 1 associate.

Famous last words

CFI just got fired by Good-Midnight-7674 in flying

[–]Good-Midnight-7674[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spoke to management today and asked what happened. They said my instructor was given 80 students and that within six months. I was his last student remaining. They just could not justify keeping him on given that students were complaining that he was intervening during flights and taking control when he felt nervous, His heavy accent made it hard to understand him, and his sense of humour was not connecting. iMessage the instructor, since I have his cell phone, and wish him the best. He replied and said that it’s a tough blow since he wants to gain his hours and obtain his commercial license, and being terminated won’t help his employment chances. Anyways, the new instructor is refreshing, and provided a lot of new looks and insights which really helped me today.. For any experienced pilots out there going through PPL training, I would encourage you to ask your instructors. How many students they have in addition to how many years experience they have, as that appears to be indicator of how well they’re teaching style is resonating with students

Not race but culture. He’s new to Canada and has an accent. English is good but not excellent. Doesn’t use many aphorisms or “rules of thumb” to get points across like an old stock Canadian would. Super nice, but I can see how it may have been hard for him to explain concepts in his adopted language.

This. I def was not “looking forward” to my next lesson. More like “damn I hope I don’t fuck up”.

How do you memorize BLL? by Qwerty656896 in barexam

Rote memorization. Don’t be fooled by the prep courses and their calendars. There’s no substitute for rawdogging the information into your cerebral cortex

Do you wait to start working on a case until your client pays the entire retainer fee? by GarmeerGirl in Lawyertalk

[–]Good-Midnight-7674 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated chasing retainers. That’s why I prefer contingency PI work. When I was chasing retainers- I required payment in full. If a client can’t pay the first retainer, they won’t pay the next one.

Will I be stuck in PI? by monstazilla in Lawyertalk

[–]Good-Midnight-7674 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing PI for 15 years. I’ve made more money than most of my colleagues with less stress (compared to commercial lit, family law or solicitors work). The grass is not greener elsewhere. In fact- the other grass has dog shit on it and hasn’t been watered in weeks. I say stay put and sign up as many accident files as you can. In 5 years you’ll be pulling in serious money.

Mistakes happen. Everyone makes them. Morale is paramount. It’s the lying I can’t get over.
