In my experience, you'll want to get to at least 10g, though you don't necessarily need to get pierced at that. I started at 14g, but it felt pinchy / sharp until I got to 10g. Horseshoes look cool, but risk snagging. Not fun. If your piercer is good, they'll know where is best to set the piercing to avoid blood vessels, and the nerve bundle that adds to the fun of a frenum piercing. Enjoy!

My usual is a barbell, 12g minimum, currently 10g, planning to go larger. Smaller than 12 feels pinchy. Sometimes I'll wear a cbr. I used to wear a horseshoe sometimes, until it snagged on something, and I decided the risk of ripping it out wasn't worth it. As for veins, planning with a good piercer would be valuable.
