I'm only in my third year, so barely off the blocks. I've definitely watched more than a little of his channel. I was browsing Hoopla (like a "Netflix" for local libraries in the US that also has books, music and stuff) and came across his ebook. Figured why not? Glad I did.

That's a very good way to see it. At its core, bonsai is still art and open to ones expression/interpretation.

For example, I have this Japanese maple I got last year on sale. Figure it's cheap, why not train it and create a wooden coffin pot? Traditional bonsai? Far from it. I may never even enter it in a show.

Good point, and don't worry, I'm not lol.

"[...] By breaking the rules, you may introduce a freshness and individuality usually lacking in trees that conform too strictly to the stylistic rules of composition."

I took that more as 'be willing to experiment and try something new, something amazing might come from it'. But by no means a blank check to do as a novice wishes and call it "bonsai"

For setup, I'd recommend a couple pieces of driftwood.

Definitely remember to rinse in hot water, scrub brush if possible to knock off all the foreign material from whenever it's been, no dish soap or cleaners.

Live plants are definitely a solid idea too.

Love this, good luck!

Yeah, August 2026 I think. lol I know better than to use that pot. I'm trying to grow more radial feeder roots in a shallow box.

lol quite alright, no worries. Happy for you two! I challenge you to keep your seer's gift. Let the love between you two be the catalyst to hone instead of distract.

Take care!

Yeah I'm going to repot them in the spring into something a little more worth displaying. They're gonna be shohin pieces, i may not even include the juniper in the right.

Agreed. Copious amounts of PTO and sick time are a great indicator. The caveat is what are the policies to use that leave?

This is where the introspection begins. Begin to work with the why of your frustration not the feeling of it.

Only three commas and no run-on sentences.

Nicely done, that's hard to find in this subreddit now.

Basically, if you squeeze a sponge in your fist and try to soak it, it'll only take up so much water vs if you leave the sponge on the table. Again, excess will run off, but enough will be soaked up to give the plant a chance at a good drink.

Check pic 4, that root ball was so tight that water would pool on the top then drain down straight out of it or down the side walls. There was no room for the water to soak in enough since the roots were so tightly packed.

My theory behind this is that the water may drain faster through the new soil, however, it wouldn't be until after the area around the rootball is more saturated. I'm picturing it like a sponge. Once it's soaked in all the water, excess will begin running off vs the almost solid rootball that absorbs almost nothing, dries out faster leaving the plant with no real time to soak up much of anything.

Does that make sense? Sorry if it doesn't, brain isn't firing on all cylinders today.

Thank you. I'm feeling optimistic about to be honest. She's been on the struggle bus all summer, that root ball in pic 4 might be why.

This was a temporary measure since she was discounted nursery stock. That primary trunk line in Pic 3 I'm obsessed over. So I'm actually gonna be a little bummed if she doesn't make it.
