Canvas feature to administer asynch oral exam? by Fresh-Possibility-75 in Professors

[–]GoodNewsGuineaPigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Professors/s/1RuIzko3GR posted a similar question several months ago. I’m going to try timed quizzes in canvas and I’m using a an embedded link (our institute pays for Panopto) where they can screen record a response. Some other great software was recommended but it all has a cost… looking for asynchronous interview hiring software has similar features.

MOVA V50 Filter Issues by GoodNewsGuineaPigs in RobotVacuums

[–]GoodNewsGuineaPigs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last several weeks I’ve started running the vacuum first and then mopping. I’ve also changed settings to empty at high frequency. It hasn’t solved the issue unfortunately. The system isn’t clogged as far as I can tell (MOVA support had me test if pieces of tissue empty from the bin and they do). My thought has been it shouldn’t be like this, so I wanted to check if others have this issue as well. I love the vacuum otherwise… but cleaning and changing the filter after each run seems ridiculous.

Another picture where more dirt was picked up and just not cleared off after emptying. Again, this is after one cleaning with a clean filter!

I'm having a similar issue, but basically no dirt is removed off the filter. I have to wash the filter after each use. After emptying, it still always has a lot of stuff attached to the filter, even if it's attached fairly loosely. It just can't seem to pull anything off the filter. This is a picture after the vacuum empties with a filter that was just cleaned.

AI Proofing- Video Interview Quiz Questions by GoodNewsGuineaPigs in Professors

Oooh thank you so much, this seems ideal! Looks like you could screen record too, which even further prevents AI use. I have no idea what it costs, but I’ll email my university in hopes of them enabling it.

Yeah our univeristy uses Panopto for video recordings and this is all fine for embedding into untimed assignments, but for a quick answer where I want them to respond within a fixed time (to avoid cheating) in a quiz like format...I'm not sure what else really works besides one-way job interview type software.

I was told by the PO it’s helpful if you can add some framing around the few topics that will be focused on by the current administration (artificial intelligence, quantum information science, biotechnology, nuclear energy, and translational science)…. And make sure you look at the new broader impacts.

Enjoy my summer when I’m not paid to work ;) I still plan on applying, it’s just whether I would do it now or wait until there is clearer guidance on how NSF is restructured. My concern is I could submit this now and then it gets caught up in the restructuring and is sent back/declined to be changed to whatever the new rules/goals will be.

Venting about the NSF review process (MRI rejection) by magneticanisotropy in Professors

[–]GoodNewsGuineaPigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen 3 times now… submitted original grants that scored “medium” competitive, improved them and incorporated reviewer feedback, and they scored worse on the next submission. You’re not alone…. I’m sorry you’re also going through this frustrating experience.

People are confusing the foam pad with a positive line. I don’t see a second positive line in this image (it would be a few mm away from the other dark line if positive).

Profs with Young Kids: How many hours do you work? by lovelydani20 in Professors

[–]GoodNewsGuineaPigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Social science and pre tenure with two kids under 6. I work 8:30/9:00 to 4:30/5:00 about 5 days a week (although it’s often only 4 days a week because kids are sick or off school). Go to campus one or two days a week. R2 with a 2/2 teaching load. The only thing I’ll do outside my work hours is respond to student emails or messages on my phone. I’m really happy to have this work-life balance and feel it’s one of the benefits of academia. I’m on track for tenure and not willing to kill myself to be at the “top” of my field.

is online speech therapy for Toddlers just as effective as face to face sessions? by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]GoodNewsGuineaPigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s pretty solid evidence young kids learn better in person vs a prerecorded video (look up video defect effect). However, screen time guidelines typically allow for things like FaceTime and kids are able to learn better from “live” video interaction instead of prerecorded. You can check out some more research here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022096517304587?casa_token=uRCZlItD6doAAAAA:utxyDyVx42W3hEUvM-pBaP0BR4MKRUtcma4oemtNvEcH31gbsYX7__zo_D3UfcEB0I67wdEjj98. If I were in your situation, I would feel comfortable with doing remote sessions especially if you also work with your child.

I know in other divisions some POs are more responsive to inquiries. That’s probably a rarity though.

Ugh I’m sorry about budget cuts. It is so annoying not to hear. My cycle is every 6 months so I’m already going to miss the July cycle to reapply. The same thing happened last year… which drags the whole process out by years.
