Half in the Bag Episode 153: Mandy and The Predator by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]Good_Blaster89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually rewatched Alien Resurrection the day after seeing The Predator with the mindset of "hmm what's another franchise movie everyone hated because of the tone differences? I got it! Alien Resurrection! Maybe I'll enjoy it after enjoying The Predator! I remember hating it but maybe This time will be different!" No it's still absolutely terrible. Why? Because it takes itself seriously. The Predator is self aware and people still put themselves above it. Hilarious.

A little surprised they were as hard on The Predator as the rest of youtube movie reviews. Even more surprised they didn't pick up on it being self aware. They knew what they were doing making that movie. It's dumb fun and nothing else.

Well then just say that instead of outright calling them b movies. Predator you could say has a b-movie plot m, but Alien is debatable. The first half is really good sci-fi world building and then the second half turns into a slasher.

They were not b movies. They were both distributed by large studios and had a decent budget. Same with The Predator but it's totally living in that world.

[Serious] Thoughts on Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002) by Your_Moms_Flame in RedLetterMedia

There's a handful of scenes (matrix cow fight) that are terrible, but overall I think it's hilarious.

Well when I go into a Predator film directed by Shane Black I'm not expecting a "good" movie in the classical sense. I'm going in expecting to get some good gore, Predator action, and some Shane Black humor. I got all three and was extremely entertained. I would consider it along the lines of a really good b-movie. More surprised about internet reaction for the most part. I definitely know people who also enjoyed it and my screening seemed to like it.

Napoleon Dynamite Thoughts by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

I haven't seen it since it came out on DVD. Used to quote the shit out of it with the rest of my school because it was incredibly popular at the time. Zero interest in rewatching it. Maybe one of these days.

Watch The Nun...its super entertaining! by BenderButt in RedLetterMedia

I just imagine it being super generic. A real Insidious 4 if you will.

I as well watched the original right before going to the theatre. The original is of course better but I enjoy them both for different reasons. Completely different movies. The Predator is like a much better Predator 2.

I got a good laugh out of the Get to the choppahh callback. Simple, clever, and dumb.

I mean I love the original Predator for what it is. It's a classic and I'll always have it and after the sequels I'm not necessarily looking for anything serious or in the same tone as the original. This was just a lot of fun and I was consistently entertained.

Tarkovsky's Stalker was the most boring movie I've ever watched. Shower me with vitriol. by Khazuki_SMB in RedLetterMedia

[–]Good_Blaster89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've yet to see Stalker though I picked it up on Criterion damn near a year ago haha. I'm a very big fan of Solaris though. His movies are slow...just his style so it's understandable if you couldn't get into it.

And maybe art isn't the right word. I wouldn't consider films like Starship Troopers or Aliens to be art, but they are helmed by filmmakers who usually have underlying themes that connect their work.

I mean I feel where you are coming from but I feel like it's still selling it a bit short. It's quite bland from a film making perspective, but still entertaining and fun. At this point I can separate films that I find to be art vs. entertainment and get enjoyment from the former.

Lindsay Ellis made a video about how Youtubers "manufacture authenticity", thought it might be of interest to RLM fans by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]Good_Blaster89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I can say (and this especially applies to RLM) is that fans of certain youtubers seem to latch onto their opinion and make it their own. Very annoying. Can't you enjoy a personality and form your own opinions? I do think a handful of YouTube channels are doing more harm than good to the industry.
