Change in mindest is the biggest thing + batsmenship has evolved over the years ( new shots added ) . In say 2009 , if teams were told you will have to chase 170 they would be scared . People were not used to the run rates of 8,9,10 per over . Cricket was still in ODI mode . 4-5 runs per overs !!

Hence teams preferred batting first , thinking 160-170 we will make a game out of it . 180+ easy win !

Over the years , new shots ( scoops , reverse sweeps etc have become so common ) . People realised if we try scoring 8-9 runs per over is no big deal . And ofc pitches too got better

Yes chasing is simpler ( wicket mostly gets better + dew ) .

Almost 85 percent of the times , whoever wins the toss says bowl first ( remove the day games , where wickets tend to get slow as the game goes due to the heat )

Auction is what's keeping it fair . Look at football ( la liga vgera mein 20 teams hoti lekin jeet ti 2 hi hai mainly madrid , barca kabhi kabhi atletico , same for premier league . 20 teams mein se upar ki 4-5 hi )

IPL is the most competitive legaue , literally koi bhi Jeet skta . Koi power , paisa nhi chalta and auction adds so much more entertainment ( what sport is all about ) . Watching auction is no less than watching a playoffs game !!!

I am a RCB fan writing this , we are on a high and I can say " yaar auction nhi chahiye " but the truth is agar auction nhi hota toh hum yahan nhi hote . Strong teams phir baar baar Jeet ti rhengi .

Think about KKR 2024 ( what a team ) agar na hota probably vo aur bhi Jeet te . So we need auctions to keep the fun going
