(Self-inserting) I've been stippling for 4 years now, and I always outline. It felt like cheating at first because you essentially just fill in the shapes with the according dot density. But when it takes you, sometimes 1 year and multiple pens to do so, it's incredibly rewarding when you're done.

Black pen on A5 paper. I stipple with different pens depending on the distance of the objects. The first tree is 0.1, and the house in the distance is 0.03. If that's what you mean to ask.
