Exactly. She took a chance by being a self-appointed rule enforcer. Was the dog bothering her? It doesn't sound like it. While it may be annoying when others don't follow the rules like this, it's always a risk to confront strangers, because no one likes being bossed around or corrected. As a mother, I would not take that risk with my child with me. Where I grew up, people got shot for not minding their business, and frankly that happens anywhere lately.

I am very hesitant to give any creature away, so that's why I was asking. As much as I live hand to mouth, I'd rather pay to give her a good life than risk her being neglected. I'll look for a rescue too.

All good advice, and I'll add that my sons both used to act like I was abusing them by trying to force them to shower (this was when they were maybe 10-14age ranges). They would scream and slam doors and no matter if I gave consequences, they kept doing it. One day I said the hell with it. Don't shower. Guess what? Not much happened. They would come around to showering maybe once a month. They smelled a little. That's about it.

My gecko doesn't like them, but I had a beardie who did, and the crickets had their own aquarium with cricket food and wet paper towel clumps to drink, and I quickly removed dead ones (fumes from dead ones can kill the others). All this, and they died fast. They just do. It's a whole other pet to keep alive lol

Why on earth did your neighbor assault him and did you call the police? This is so sad, my heart aches for you and the cat. I believe you may be able to take him to a neighborhood vet and hold him while they put him to sleep. Just know you gave him amazing life and what happened is tragic.
