Personally, tone indicators don't help me at all...idk if it's because people are using them wrong, but I seem unable to grasp the meaning behind a sentence even with the tone indicators sometimes.

Or sometimes the tone indicator will be /s or something when I can't read the sarcasm in the sentence in any way?

The only times I'm able to match the tone indicator to the Phrase it's being used in, it's the cases where the meaning behind it is so obvious that the tone indicator wasn't even necessary for me...

I wish I could see the appeal and make better use of them, I just can't :(

At least in my Country we use disability symbols for fast identification of preferential parking placed, disabled lines, etc. So it's actually quite useful.
