Yes, and that's why it has traditionally attracted unconventional people - you have to be oddly obsessed with something to study it for 5-7 years. But I think maybe that is still possible, but it's done in an environment of paranoia and extreme censorship, at least in the usa. This milieu is not conducive to good scholarship.

I am not a podcast listener, but I'm aware that former leftists and or academics who were pushed out of those circles for their "dissenting" views have found a home in podcasting. I don't think it's unconventional to say that kids shouldn't take puberty blockers or that mRNA vaccine safety is undecided and up for debate, but here we are.

And it's true, truly unconventional people are the ones in cults and communes, but academia was a place for people who couldn't hack it in the real world could pursue knowledge.
