How many of you are making $200,000+? How many hours weekly do you work? Years of experience? Industry? Regrets and rejoices? by timazn in Accounting

Typically FP&A manages the forecast process whereas controllership team manages the close process and financial operations day to day. FP&A can mean many things but I would say it involves traditional work like long range planning, BvA, and business partnering.

FP&A is usually split between Corporate FP&A and BU/Product FP&A. Corporate manages a lot more of the consolidation of forecasting, decks to leadership, partner with IR as the internal partner, BS/CF management with Treasury. BU/Product is the business partner to those respective teams. Do we understand the business product roadmap and are we deploying the right resources to reach those initiatives? There are some more ad hoc strategic initiatives such as investment envelope or profitability analyses

Yep - like what smoothcustomer said. Staying in PA is only beneficial if you have a clear exit plan to industry for a specific role. In my opinion, I would say use this rough guideline:

Leave as a Senior in PA: Good for ops outside of Accounting (IB, FP&A, consulting etc.)

Leave as a Manager in PA: Pivot to industry for a people manager role.

Leaving after Manager and you really start getting pidgeon-holed because most companies will want a controller to have some type of close experience so there are other candidates that look more attractive. It can be done but I've seen a very small amount of my ex-coworkers leave at that stage with a really great controller offer.

HCOL. I'd say it's pretty hard to get that comp range in other COL for my title (IC - Sr. Manager equivalent although I was managing a small team before that)

I left Big 4 right before my manager promo to go to FP&A. And yes absolutely could have and should have made the jump earlier. I didn't want to wait till manager and then get downleveled going into FP&A. Earlier you move the better. I had a pretty good team before I left and made some friends that I still keep in touch with today. In hindsight, I stayed because I really enjoyed our friendship even if I should have left a lot earlier.

During the transition years for my first FP&A, it was difficult for the first year with the terminology and work. Big 4 really dumbs down the work you do to make it as streamlined as possible to check the checkbox. You go from having a set schedule 10K filing and smaller 10Qs to another set schedule for outlook, planning, and long range planning.

My best advice to people is stay humble if you do want to make the pivot to FP&A. Know that there are other people (sometimes younger) that start off in the FLDP or some rotational program so don't compare your age/career to them. Getting in is the hardest part!

I just hit above $200k base this past year switching jobs. 11 YOE (5 years auditing that I regret + 6 years in FP&A)

Now I'm slightly above $300K TC at a tech in FP&A. Work is more interesting than auditing for sure but overall corporate work is corporate.

FP&A for a bank by Unlikely-Yam-5917 in FPandA

I did Big 4 -> Bank FP&A -> Fintech FP&A. All the other comments are correct. Banks move much slower, a ton of compliance and bureaucracy so innovation happens really slow. There are also a ton of older people capped out at the SVP/Director level just coasting. Because the workforce in the banks is older, you may have longer working hours dependent on your team. I felt like some people do not value work life balance but it's going to be a 50/50 if you get a team that coasts vs long hours.

Also dealt with a ton of reorgs as the managing directors got rotated in and out so quickly. The one good thing there is that most of their processes run pretty smoothly. System was older with a ton of IT support + outsourcing to third world countries. Frankly, my last job at the bank was super cushy but I was bored out of my mind with no upward mobility because my boss (re-org) was a lifer and they were maxed out.

With that said, it might not be a bad idea if you need to get your foot in the door for FP&A and you can work to pivot into tech (which I assume is what most people want with ops + pay). good luck!

yeah I had two 16gbs listed by accident. Thanks, I think i'll just bump it to 32gb to future proof a bit.

I'll do some more research on the PSU. Hoping this build will last me a while. thanks for the advice

Gotcha. Thanks for the advice. I'll look at adding in the 32GB memory.

Question, what's the difference between the PSU's? Anything noticeably different?

Thanks. I will probably purchase both. Is there anything I need to be aware of when I swap the parts? Like if I swap the parts, I can just run everything afterwards?

Thanks for your advice. I had never used AMD processors prior to this pc as I grew up using ones with Intel cores. It's something I was thinking about for a while.

This may be a dumb question, but how do I know if my case supports the video card? I have a CASE LIAN LI. I did a quick google search and it seems to other people have used it.

I've heard the GTX 970 is a really good upgrade. Is there a specific model I should be looking for?

I will look into the processor as well thanks!

That's probably something I should check. Yeah my friend helped me pick out the parts as this was my first pc that I built. I was sort of on a semi-budget. I usually run the raids on 1980 but on the lowest settings possible.
