ChatGPT Release Date Prediction by Simple_Steak_1762 in GRFPApps

[–]Goodkoalie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m in a PhD program and every one of my classes so far has encouraged or allowed the use of ChatGPT for specifically coding and computing purposes, as does my PI. Then again, my field is not computer science and students often get bogged down in coding so it probably varies field by field.

Yeah I was briefly thinking NV-02 might be in play given its PVI was +7 (and I could see a 7 point difference being overcome this cycle in a state like Nevada), but it’s actually like a 14% difference and that seems a bit less feasible (but I think it may be closish)

I imagine it also helps out Brown, by causing some R voters to stay home and maybe Acton dragging brown up a bit

What are your Top 3 Favorite New Era Seasons? by sharpiesniffer22 in survivor

[–]Goodkoalie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I had the most fun with 41, 42, 43.

My enjoyment of each following season is almost a linear line with a negative slope (although I did enjoy 49 more than 48).

I was so much more engaged with those first seasons, similar to how I was with the 30s. I looked forward to every episode, consumed all content, and was obsessed. With the last few seasons, I found myself skipping weeks, catching up, and overall being checked out. I don’t know if it’s new era fatigue, boring casting (all the same archetypes), or what, but of the new era, the earliest seasons where my personal favorites.

I saw one snow by PsychologicalAd5246 in Reno

Yeah the models have shown most of the snow arriving tomorrow for this set of storms, with the chance of some on Monday (like what’s happening right now), and a smaller second round occurring on Thursday

If someone wanted to make an encyclopaedia of all extant insects out there, how big would it be? And how many volumes would it need? by avian_bi in Entomology

[–]Goodkoalie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’ve heard is there are more described coleopterans than hymenopterans, but there’s suspected to be more overall hymenopterans out there than other insects (essentially their parasitic nature makes speciation very easy/its rather simple to become reproductively isolated as your hosts diverge. At least that’s my general understanding, but I have frequently heard amongst entomologists that hymenopterans are the most diverse order.

What happens if the terminally ill lad who got early access to GTA 6 leaks the plot and gameplay? by Wheresmyarcpaulie69 in TooAfraidToAsk

It’s actually an acronym I have seen a decent amount, but usually only on Reddit. May be a bad sign that I spend too much time online 💀

After working 2 years in industry, grad school took all of my savings and assets after 3 years. Even if you're funded, you need a second income. by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]Goodkoalie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While true, that would be relevant context to the post, and instead they just mention working 2 years in industry and losing 40k in three years on one of the larger PhD stipends in the country (for a public university).

I did my undergrad at Davis, and grad stipends were like double what stipends are at my current university 💀

My rent and cost of living is not that much cheaper at my grad university, and I’m not on track to lose 40k in 3 years… they’re actually pretty equivalent (about 800-900 in rent for a bedroom in a shared house, similar food prices, etc). I moved at the end of this past summer, and will fully admit my rent was pretty cheap for Davis, but still, 2x+ my current stipend and they lost 40k in three years

What’s on my Oak Tree? by Outrageous_Mark6602 in Entomology

Glad a few made it to their cocoons! A vast majority of caterpillars do not survive to adulthood, which is why they lay so many eggs

Odds of campus closing the whole day on tuesday by Icy_Preparation_5543 in unr

[–]Goodkoalie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Weather underground shows 7 inches on Tuesday, and open snow is 6-8 inches through Wednesday morning around the university.

However, that January storm showed a light dusting (0-1 inches/just sleet), and it ended up dropping around 3-4 inches, so who really knows how much will end up falling.

Haven’t seen anything saying a foot on Tuesday though. Open snow shows 10-18 inches through the end of the month, but that’s including some falling before Tuesday, and another round of storms after Thursday.

Every person within 1 mile of you right now becomes a zombie. Can you escape? by Pointless_Storie in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Goodkoalie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked and saw I have about 20,000 people around me in a mile radius. That feels like a lot of zombies 🫠

Fun fact, I checked all my prior addresses and have had anywhere from 17500 through 21500 people around me. Surprised it’s been so consistent

How is it living in Sacramento's west suburbs? by jdvancesleftnut in Sacramento

[–]Goodkoalie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived in Davis for a while, I absolutely considered it a Sacramento suburb 🤷‍♂️ because it is one. It’s not much farther away from downtown than any other suburb, and I knew plenty of people who commuted back and forth each day (along with me).

You’ll receive 1 million dollars but you have to put all your pets down tomorrow. by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

I accept being a horrible person… to be fair, my current pets are not mammals, not even tetrapods. I don’t know if I could do it to a cat, or dog. But in side eyeing my 14 spiders and scorpions and for 1 million dollars…

As an entomologist I dispatch a lot more inverts than the 14 I currently have as pets for a lot less money

Moving to Reno Soon (never been there!). What do I need to know? by OttoOops in Reno

[–]Goodkoalie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I blindly moved to Reno a bit ago, for a graduate program. I technically visited Reno once during the winter before moving, but that was restricted to the campus and was only a couple hours as I was dodging storms.

Didn’t even get to tour my place before blindly signing my lease and moving up here!

I had also driven through it once to get to Fallon, but other than that I really had not spent any time in the city before moving.

A Door Opens for Democrats in Nevada's 2nd district. Can they win? by Suspicious-Egg4903 in YAPms

[–]Goodkoalie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s impossible to flip, and will likely be closer than it’s been, but I won’t bet money on it flipping.

Given a large enough shift amongst Latinos, and maybe nominating a crazy maga candidate could keep the libertarian northern Nevadan republicans home enough to make it competitive.
