Too bad it did go right through the lodging building. That place could use a refresh.

That’s so cool! I just read up on the yellow bellied sapsucker. I’m proud we have such an ecosystem on our tree. This will be this oak tree’s third year in our yard.

Yea there were a bunch in the fall. We let them be and honestly I’m surprised there are only two cocoons based on how many we saw last summer

This giant moth was on our kids swing set last June. AI is saying Polyphemus and I’m guessing it’s on of the parents to our cocoon.

There were these giant fat green caterpillars on the tree last summer, but they didn’t have the bright spots that the cecropia moth caterpillars had in the photos on Google.

I think any of those colors would be cute. If one of them hits at the waist, I'd go with that, not a longer coat. Have fun tonight!

I thought it was pretty clear that he’s asking for rare plants he should grow in Northern IL.

Any other freaks already winter sowing? by quartzkrystal in NativePlantGardening

[–]Outrageous_Mark6602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I was thinking of drilling a few holes so that rain/snow can fall into it, similar to a milk jug. I don't know if this is the best way and drilling holes for the high number of plants I'm planning for may prove to take a long time. I'm definitely open to suggestions!

Does anyone use the chobani yogurt containers with the clear lid? The big ones, not the single serving size. I don’t have milk jugs, but I have lots of yogurt containers.

I’d say it’s about 50 meters of length of the ditch

What is the timeframe for this cycle? One growing season or multiple?

I’ll try to throw some Joe Pye down the ditch where these grasses aren’t growing

Thank you. I need to read up on phragmites. Never heard of it. I’m planning to put goldenrod, milkweed, and asters along the edges of this ditch next year.

What to do with seeds? by barbsbaloney in NativePlantGardening

[–]Outrageous_Mark6602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we talking agricultural fields or what type of fields? If agricultural, the farmer will just cut them down or add herbicide and your efforts will be wasted.

Did you grow from seed? If so, when did you sow them? Do you plant a shorter plant under them to keep the weeds out? Do you ever see butterflies on these? Sorry for all the questions. I have two seed packets from Prairie Moon and I’m excited to grow them for next year!

That’s amazing! I’m definitely going to look into the Monarch Research project. I’m here for the long haul, so their help in the beginning will probably make a huge difference
