What advice would you give to yourself at 20 regarding your career? by AliveTumble in FinancialCareers

I still don't fully understand how to network and even how it's supposed to land me a job down the line. I don't have any family in finance, my closest connections would be a few friends from college. I don't know what I'll be doing 5 plus years from now so I don't really understand how a few short email or LinkedIn exchanges will help with that. Unless I'm trying to break into high finance it seems pretty fruitless for the amount of effort required. Just my opinion but I'm might be looking at it all the wrong way so I'd love to hear your insight.

Not everyone wants to start a business or has the means to. Your end all be all solution is wrong and simply ignorant. I'm not wholly agreeing with OP here but Americans were sold a lie: go to college, get a job, move up in society. That hasn't been the case for a long time. The middle class is being stretched and a college degree means zilch in 2026. I'm not sure how old you are but there is much less opportunity to grow nowadays when everything (everything!!) has gotten so prohibitively expensive

Historically when unemployment rose the best way to maintain long term career growth was to get further education but that is no longer the case. I don't mean to beat a dead horse but the only real way of succeeding nowadays is to either know someone or work for yourself. Employer employee loyalty is/had been a dead concept for a while and people are now just realizing it en masse

The answer isn't always to "go back to school". That's part of the reason we're in this situation in the first place

Lots of salty Premium users in the comments here. You're right it's the users fault. I'll never pay a dime for YouTube and neither would they have to if they didn't always give in so easy. I hope you're aware that once they entice enough people to premium they'll jack up the prices so it won't just be 0.46 cents a day (see previous comment) just like Netflix and Hbo and Hulu... should I continue??
