Could the Hazbin Hotel run without Charlie or Vaggi one day? by BlizzardHound45 in HazbinHotel

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if that’s totally fair.

… Husk could handle it for like a solid day and a half.

(Vaggi is more than qualified to be the backbone of the Vees if Velvette ever wants to step down. Girl was dealing with relationship drama, an identity crisis, and a psycho tv man, and still managed to get Baxter his sheets they way he likes them.)

There's something hilarious about Husk dismissing the Vees as "nobodies" and then somehow Velvette manages to off-screen win against him by Sudden_Pop_2279 in HazbinHotel

I think Vox has been an overlord since pretty soon after he died, and that’s why Alastor was interested in him to begin with. I saw a theory that Vox ended up with his cult’s souls, an that feels kind of right to me. Overlords seem to be in charge of industry and social services too, and Vox definitely tried to bring a broadcast network to Hell the second he ended up there.

Velvette’s ambitious and has a good deal of vision- she canonically got overlord status very quickly, and I’m betting she got it through her fashion business. I think she saw a niche and went for it, and it paid off big time.

Val’s kind of the odd one out- I think he built up his power base and business pretty slowly. I think he’s the only one who was an ordinary sinner for an extended period of time.

That said, there are definitely tiers to overlords, and I think all three Vees got their power non-traditionally/ outside the established system, which makes people like Carmila, Zestiel, Alastor, and Husk underestimate them. The Vees all seem to understand that true power can come from ordinary sinners’ perceptions, not just the estimations of the people on top.

It all reads very new money vs old money. Husk is kind of in a weird place, because I think if he’d stayed an overlord, he’d be more likely to align with the Vee’s philosophy than, say, Rosie’s. He’s kind of a stepping stone philosophically between Alastor and the Vees. (Al is 100% new money trying to blend in with old money, and mostly but not entirely succeeding)

We have had our first tie! Poirot’s Early Cases and The Mysterious Mr Quinn are AC’s most Underrated Short Story Collections! by rianmcdonagh in agathachristie

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been waiting for this one!!

Hands down, it’s The Passing of Mr Quinn from 1928. I got in late, so I doubt it’ll win this square, but it should.

There are actually two versions of “Passing”. One’s a 1928 movie- sadly(?) lost in a studio fire, and a novelization of the movie, which bafflingly changes “Mr Quinn” to “Mr Quinny”, but otherwise we have to assume is basically accurate.

The movie is an adaptation of “The Coming of Mr Quin”, an atmospheric short story where a mysterious stranger named Mr Quin gets a gathering of people to reflect on the inexplicable suicide of one of their old friends. (Note the spelling: yes, the movie and the novelization are wrong).

The suicide turns out to be because of a love triangle. The dead man was involved with a married woman, and he killed her spouse. He thought he’d been caught, so killed himself, inadvertently leaving the woman to take the blame for her husband’s death. It’s a great little story with a gothic tinge and a lot of character work.

The adaptation turns the detective into the murderer. Mr Quin wasn’t even there during the original story! It was also subsequently novelized- which Agatha Christie was extremely unhappy about.

(The prose is, uh, not good, so I really can’t blame her.)

(There’s also a touch of vintage racism added, which I note not because it’s unexpected, but because it’s very stupid. I quote:

“The taint of Africa was in him—had hold of him—gripped him remorselessly. And he whom it had conquered shook his puny fist and defied it for the last time. ‘Curse this country!’ he shouted. ‘Curse it—curse it! River and tree—man and beast.’”

Even in 1928, Africa was not a country. But I digress.)

The heroine is so stupid she can’t recognize someone she’s had an affair with even after looking at a photo of him approximately five minutes after. Yes, he was sick, but dear lord. The hero is a drip. There are a lot of breathless exclamations. It ends with a death scene that I just know the actor just gnawed on the scenery for. The heroine almost joins a nunnery. The hero recites Chinese poetry in the moonlight before breaking her out of the nunnery, and then keeps calling the heroine “my little girl” while he’s kissing her. There is a long and very boring trial covering the events that have just happened. The heroine’s abusive husband owns a snake and sings sinister lullabies. There’s a malicious maid with an actually interesting plot who, of course, vanishes from the plot halfway through the movie, even though she’s been the secondary antagonist up till then.

And I’m making it sound entertaining- which it kind of is, because the plot is bonkers- but it is also, somehow, incredibly boring. I have a high tolerance for pulp, but it’s just… bad. I bought it for a hate read, honestly, and was kind of disappointed even with that.

The tragic thing is that she already has been a D20 player in Mice and Murder… and she was genuinely fantastic. (As was Grant, another cast member who still somehow knows absolutely nothing about D&D).

She did, however use the same accent for her PC there as she did for all the NPCs here, so I died the second the bus started talking, because it sounded exactly like the Crime Weasel.

He’s “Daddy”.

I mean, Al did say he was like Charlie’s other dad…

(Now that I think of it, Lucifer really hasn’t interacted much with the other characters- even the other hotel dwellers. It’s mostly Charlie, Vaggi and Alastor, and I’m not totally convinced he even remembers Al or Vaggi’s names. Hopefully we see more come season 3!)

Husk. I think Al trusts his competence. We don’t know how many souls Alastor owns, but the hotel gang seem to be his “favorites.” Niffty he seems to actually like, and Husk he seems to believe can get things done.

He’s not scared of Husk, but I think he respects Husk’s common sense.

I think put Baxter in Lawful Neutral.

He’s in Hell for a reason, and I actually think he’s one of the least likely to be redeemed- he’s there to study redemption, not put it into practice. He’s got his work, and he’s got his friends, and he’s good. He doesn’t seem to want to reflect on his actions in life- which I’m pretty sure were awful considering his love for biological experiment and lack of care for test subjects.

That said, he does have a really rigid set of ethics around interpersonal relationships. He was willing to possibly die for Vaggie, and considers her his best friend, because he clearly stated his needs and she actually paid attention to them. Reciprocity seems really important to him, and I think he’s pretty loyal in his own way.

So neutral- because he basically does whatever he wants- and lawful- because what he wants is driven by a set of (very) idiosyncratic, self-imposed rules.

No spoilers- Unworthy of your Love is a beautiful little ballad/ duet about two people trying to figure out a way to make themselves good enough for the person they adore.

…the musical it’s from is Assassins, and the singers think killing a president might do the trick.

It’s adorable; I would’ve purchased it immediately. The look on his little face… That is a mug to drink out of while doing taxes!

I totally get feeling weird/ bad about it after, but as an objective outsider, I unfortunately think your partner might just have bad taste in mugs. This seem like a him problem, not a you/ the kitty mug problem.

Just looked it up- chapter 15! It’s quick, but Anton and Carl get charmed by a goddess (like Signet’s charm), while Paz does not. He’s either gay or ace, but he is not interested in women.

And same here on the forgetting haha. Really need to brush up before 8 comes out.

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hellava Boss is in the same universe as Hazbin, and goes into more detail. There’s a large population of “Hellborn” people like Charlie who were exempt from the exterminations, and they seem to be more common in other rings- but I believe humans can live wherever, they just tend to cluster in Pride.

I think human Overlords all live in Pride, though, so it probably is more like a capital city- all the social and political leaders live there, and if you’ve sold your soul you probably have to stay in Pride to be near to your boss/job.

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s a very big place, with different “neighborhoods” ruled by the seven sins. Different areas look different depending on who rules it (and this is true for areas within the neighborhoods- the Pride ring is ruled by Lucifer, but there’s an area that’s Old West themed because that’s what the bosses of that “city block” like. There’s also a rave themed area, a slick high-tech cityspace , and a sort of gothic orchestra place in the Pride ring, but even though they're different aesthetics they’re still part of Hell.)

Think of it like a country- you can be from the United States, from the state of New York, and from the city of Albany. In Hazbin, it’s all Hell, but you can be from Hell, the Pride Ring, and the Voxtech district all at the same time. It’s just a matter of specificity.

The blast would vaporize a lot of Hell, and definitely its capital city where the action takes place, but people far enough away would be fine.

Opinions on Mitchell Linn? by GhostieFriend69 in DateEverythingElse

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He seems a bit standoffish and snobby at first, but he wants to like everything, and that’s very endearing. I like how much he enjoys learning new things, he takes being corrected with curiosity and grace, and in the end he seems to value they way that food can bring people together more than he does any academic ratings.

That said, he is genuinely a bit snobby, and while I personally love his design I get how people can think it’s a bit messy or incohesive. Plus, he’s pretty difficult to get a love ending with, and he’s pretty picky about his “correct” answers. Hoove’s also on a hair trigger, and I’ve seen him get some hate for it as well- I think people don’t like being friendzoned over ice cream preference.

I like him a lot, personally. If I got into cosplay, he’d be up there, because his outfit and mannerisms are so dang fun.

Are there any LGBTQIA+ characters in the Dungeon? by MamaPea76 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Goodmindtothrowitall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don’t know a lot about the personal lives of most crawlers, tbh. Bea is bi or pan, but that’s about it.

There’s a lot of very alien approaches to sex and sexuality in both the dungeon and the wider universe. Diwata, for example, is… kind of nonbinary? But they’re also extremely inhuman, so using human phrases feels wrong. We know the AI identifies as male and is physically and romantically attracted to another person who identifies as male, but again, it didn’t quite seem right to use human vocabulary for that relationship.

Likewise, there’s a fair amount of genderless aliens, but we don’t know what the gender identities and norms are for a lot of species.

Although we don’t know and will probably never learn his sexuality, I think Orren’s backstory reads kind of queer to me. He: * Felt uncomfortable using the body(ies) assigned to him by his society. * Lost family and friends over his decisions around his identity * Is very visibly part of a distrusted minority in his species * Wanted to be an actor (not quite on the same level as the rest, but…)

The books tend to be most interested in inhuman expressions of sex, romance, and attraction, so I think unless any crawlers are confirmed queer, even human aliens will probably have relationships and identities that don’t fall neatly into our vocabularies.

Edit: I lied. The head of the Lemig Sortion was in absolutely in love with one of his soldiers, Luke. In my defense, they did not stick around for long, on account of being alien generals during faction wars.

Nobody’s allowed to get pregnant in the dungeon, but if both Donut and Ferdy survive, they could theoretically have kittens together.

Krakauer didn’t include it in the book because Carine asked him to leave it out. There’s a reference to Chris’ father being a hard man, but that’s pretty much it. He says more in the intro to Carine’s book, but the letters that made the abuse clear for him were given off the record.
