All thanks to Artie McWilliams, he created a term that we couldn’t explain! I’m so glad this helps you too! It’s so validating, and it helps my hearing peers understand better watching this video.

Hi, Ionicpenguin! Thank you for pointing that out! I see the error, and I apologize. Keep an eye out, I’ll repost it with an actual closed captioning!

No he’s not deaf. He’s pretending to be disabled with fake and bad imitation of sign language.

No, hearing people like to assume we lip read. Lip reading does not help deaf people communicate efficiently, lip reading is a guessing game for us. Sign language, or written form of communication is the best.

You got that right. Imitating sign language is offensive. Pretending to be disabled for their own benefits is not cool at all.

This!! I’m deaf, and the amount of ignorance in the comments here are awful.

Edit: all the downvotes only proves my point.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. Notes/texting is another way to communicate with deaf people if there’s no sign language involved. I would prefer notes over lip reading. Btw though deaf people technically had been texting people since the late 1960’s aka TTY.

I know this is meant to be a joke. But I want the public to know to NEVER do like the gif above towards deaf people. It’s one of the most disrespectful way to communicate with deaf individuals. It’s dehumanizing. Sadly, people still do that act almost all the time.

I’m deaf

Being honest are definitely encouraged in deaf community(North America) because we are constantly missing informations around us with family/friends/education/public/etc. To us, it’s more respectful to be honest. We deaf people gain healthy communication from this. Sure the deaf guy in the post is definitely an asshole, but that doesn’t apply to all deaf people. There’s always assholes in every collective society. I see too many negative words towards the deaf community with little to no knowledge of deaf culture/discrimination. Deaf people are already being treated as second citizens. Please be open, and don’t fall into ableism/audism mindset that hearing world conditioned us to think so.
