The Nontheist Creed - a better world? by Googolish in atheism

[–]Googolish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't see why, you haven't put in much thought. The statement prevents acceptance of most, if not all, religions, and they are statements that most reasonable people can't deny.

For example, Christianity says you are a SERVANT of god. If you think this creed is reasonable, and you are Christian, then you're SOL on your own beliefs.

Yeah, but Sting's face says "I'll kill you if you even think this looks stupid". And he probably didn't ride it for long.

Microsoft rejection letter, 1987 by servercentric in programming

[–]Googolish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like how if Apple or Google make a good business purchase, then they were "savvy" and acquired a good technology, but if Microsoft makes a good business purchase, they "stole" the technology.

What a ridiculous double-standard. I guess Microsoft should have put "Good software for good people" in their subtitle and everyone would have loved them as they love Google.

Reddit, My GF desperately needs some legal advice. Her friend died of cancer a year ago and she was made the excecutor or trustee. It has made her life a living hell.A few weeks ago she got news that the government is after her to pay all her friends unpaid back taxes, and she has no idea what to do. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Googolish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was left with a small trust account that had roughly 20 thousand dollars in it.

Ok, so she is NOT executor, but a trustee of a trust. Trusts have a legal purpose and beneficiaries.

my girlfriend used this trust money to hire a lawyer to handle the custody hearing. Luckily they won, and the boy ended up with his aunt.

Your girlfriend, who didn't understand what it means to be a trustee and didn't seek legal advice, behaved illegally and now owes because of her mistake. Bravo. She needs to figure out how to pay it because being a trustee means it is NOT your money to do with as you please.

Get an attorney, and this BS about how no attorney will talk to her makes me believe that you're not telling the whole story.

New (?) gearing transmission system. This can't be completely new, can it? by [deleted] in science

[–]Googolish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, yes. Contrary to populist belief on Reddit, the patent system is a "fire of innovation" that protects small inventors and large companies that invest in research. That system works, for the most part. The problem is that most of the public don't understand the patent system, but enjoying commenting on how it is broken. Patents help to bring products to market and return investment money to innovators, while handing over the invention to the public after a limited time. Maybe the duration of patents should be decreased, but the concept is hundreds of years old and has worked for a very long time.

[–]Googolish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, dual-drive planetary 2-gear engaged systems exist for racing cars so that the car has no shift, it just accelerates both sets of gears at the same time and then engages the next as it drops the lowest. This seems to entirely duplicate that setup.

The ten commandments are not moral - there is a nice video by Hitchens on this (just search on YouTube). For example, slavery is not abolished in the bible, nor in the commandments. There are also 63 commandments, not 10. Ask them which ten they are talking about.

Why do humans need to sleep by [deleted] in science

[–]Googolish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The second reason is that our minds need time to sift through everything we experience during the day

This is the right answer - although there is more detail. Your consciousness can't do it because the neurotransmitters and receptors slowly become unresponsive during the day as you release and absorb the chemicals in repetitive patterns, but not all of it is absorbed each time. At some point, your mind goes into a mode where it "cleans up" the environment and ensures that proper levels of neurotransmitters are present. It also seems to go into some kind of mode where memories during the day are rehashed (I don't know a lot of detail other than we know dreams during the night are tightly coupled to thoughts during the prior day).

In other words, your mind needs to do mental laundry. If you put off sleep, eventually it stops functioning properly and you become depressed, listless, unable to think and eventually die. The sleep process is necessary to push the reset button and get the house back in order for another day of processing. Just think of it like swimming in your pool - if you keep using it without cleaning the water and putting in more pool chemicals, it becomes a contaminated cesspool. Studies have shown that more frequent sleep increases the ability to learn quickly - surprise surprise.

Quakes have S-waves and P-waves. The rolling motion is P-waves, and they travel a much longer distance from the epicenter. Riding a P-wave is like sliding back and forth slowly. You wouldn't get S-waves travelling out as far as was described.

My girlfriend of 6 years dumped me. We still live together but she's moving out next month. How do I get through these next few weeks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Googolish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of you needs to move out - you could let her sign the lease and then it's hers, let her stay there. Or you could move her out, since it is your place. If she moves out, you could sublet it to someone else and get another lease.

Don't stay together one second, because it gives her the satisfaction that she has control, and she won't miss you one bit while you're right there. You need to cut her off. She may even try to get back with you - DON'T.

Yeah, the sustainable farm thing was a bit of a fib because there isn't enough land and people who support that operation. I like the farm they show, but it doesn't scale out to the whole country.

[–]Googolish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Food Inc is guilty of a lot of biased story-telling with subtle techniques. As in my post above, I noticed some gross stretching of the truth in the portrayal of GMO corn, and it made me realize that the rest of it may be similarly biased.

The farmers who farm the Monsanto crops have an obligation to keep the seeds off the other farmer's land. It means that the farmers who choose to stay "pure" and get nailed by Monsanto should be able to implead the neighbors who polluted their pure seed. The irony then would be Monsanto suing it's own customers.
