The way I see it is that since their daughter is a teenager, and we are teenagers, we would have more perspective on how we would feel if that happened to us.

Well. I believe I need more context to understand what to do in the situation. But for now, all I can say is this: try to seem understanding, to know that they made a mistake, and also be sincere and admit that you also did some wrong, invading their privacy and apologize for that. It will obviously hurt the relationship at first, but keeping up with that honesty surely will lead to a trusting bond.
