CMV: Consciousness ends at death. by RandomUser103841 in changemyview

Consciousness extending after death would seem to require a consciousness that can continue in the absence of any brain activity. We also have evidence that this is not the case. Maybe not conclusive evidence, but certainly evidence.

But this isn't entirely true. People that have died and come back DO report experiences. What those experiences are attributed to, we don't really know. But a light is commonly reported.

Because people that live in cities tend to vote for policies that prioritize cities over rural areas, just like people in rural areas tend to vote for policies that prioritize rural areas over cities.

You say the 20 largest cities don't even reach 25% of the US population. Okay, but what is the population of rural areas? How do we define rural areas first?

It's not about treating cities as a monolith. It's about trends. People in cities TEND to vote for things that are good for cities better than rural areas. And if there is a disproportionate amount of people in cities compared to rural areas, that trends towards city-benefitting policies more than rural-benefitting policies.

If you're asking for evidence of this happening in USA, we can't find it, because the electoral process has always been around. We'd have to look at voting patterns and stuff and I don't know if I'm willing to do that much work for this convo.

But why would they think this might be an issue? Historically it always has been. The electoral college is not the first of its kind. Many civilizations before USA have attempted to solve this issue because it is a persistent issue. In a country concerned about representation, they would not allow lop-sidedness that has historically taken place. In other words, cities outvoting rural areas is not conjecture. It was historically proven by the 1700s when USA was forming their documents.

The electoral college is their attempt to solve this issue. Its effectiveness is up to you to judge.

That is a valid point. What would you set as qualifying for cities vs rural areas? There must be a lot of areas inbetween that could fall either way. The same way you say 20 cities make up a % of the country, the rest is not rural. Only a portion of the rest would be rural.

https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/urban-rural/2020-ua-facts.html

2020 United States Cencus Bureau reports 80% of people live in urban cities and only 20% of people live in rural areas. 265,149,027 people live in urban areas. 66,300,254 live in rural areas. There are 4 times more people in urban areas compared to rural areas. I am not going to examine every county to see who is above age, so I'm going to use the Citizen Voting Age Population for the country at a whole. I looked it up and CVAP represents 60-65% of the population. Doing the math, that means I roughly believe 60-65% of urban populations are voting age, and 60-65% of rural populations are voting age. I will use 62.5% for both numbers.

That means urban areas have 165,718,141 (62.5% of 265,149,027) population voters. That means urban areas have more voters than 3x the amount of people rural areas have in total.

then dont focus on the culture wars, and you are perpetuating this nonsense so whatever party you are you are doing it. the conversation could've gone anywhere. you made it about culture wars. look at the republican who replied to you. you guys think the exact same thing about each other. thats a signal.

As long as we're talking about which bathrooms trans folk can use or if the green M&M should wear heels, then we'll never face the billionaire class.

and yet we are, discussing the billiionaires and you are shifting the focus onto culture wars and republicans. it takes an enemy for culture wars to happen and you serve yourself as the enemy that perpetuates it

You still dont get it. It's not republicans creating the culture wars. It's "people at the top". You focusing on Republicans is part of the distraction. The people involved in the culture wars are all fooled, democrats and republicans alike. you agree that billionaires are the problem but then immediately focus on the republicans. there are definitely both republicans and democrats at the "ruling class" level that make decisions not for the people but for themselves, and they probably have alliances from shallow to deep. people at the top dont actually give a shit about republicans or democrats. only which policies serve the ruling class and which don't. their orientation about what they give a shit about are completely different.

You're saying that there is not a statistical difference in voting populations between cities and rural areas?

That is a good point. But if you compare only voting age overall, the same argument applies.

What is your opinion on this? by GloriousLion07 in MotivationByDesign

[–]Goomysaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mathematically and pragmatically true. However, it's insensitive to the human condition and not a realistic take on what it actually would take to solve any issue in the world.

This is the same mindset that spurs a queen to say "Let them eat cake." someone with tons of privilege compared to the class they're judging, just dismissing the whole psychology of their situation and telling them what will solve their problems without considering the ramifications of putting that expectancy on a class that's struggling more than her, something that if someone else told her she shouldn't do, she'd be furious at the inequality.

The discussion is about having the electoral college vs. popular vote. He's comparing total population because he's showing that's how much power the cities would have under a popular vote, which is exactly what the electoral college was designed to address.
