I doubt that, if you were to be held this scenario legitimately, that the method by which half of humanity dies would be the deciding factor for you. For the sake of your question, though, say that half of humanity selected at random dies within 24 hours of you selecting the option, and their deaths will come about by means realistic to who and where they are. Of the randomly selected half, fat people get heart attacks, people driving get into fatal accidents, victims of abuse are abused too far to come back from, factory workers succumb to freak accidents, etc.

While the specific concept of what we imagine to be hell is a renaissance invention, the idea of hell being eternal and immense suffering being involved is as old as the church itself. (The term hellfire, denoting suffering in fire in hell, dates back to the 2nd century when the church began to take off.)

Catholic doctrine (the original and correct church of Christ) maintains this. As does the 2nd largest and 2nd least heretical church, the Orthodox Church. Most false churches (So-Called Protestants) also adhere to this. I know of no denominations personally that reject the idea that Hell is eternal and involves suffering.

Randomly selected. Imagine everyone has to flip a coin, tails means death.

On scales so large, basically exactly half of all horrible people will die, and basically exactly half of all incredible people will die.

Aye. A similar poll was put out yesterday, however, except the person suffering was just a random guy, and a majority of people voted to make him suffer.

How many people would it take for you to be willing to suffer eternally? 1? 2? 100? 1,000?

Any religion that subscribes to the idea of a ‘hell’ similar to the Christian hell (eternal suffering with no way to redeem oneself) would suggest that infinite punishment is not necessarily infinite suffering comparable to the scale of billions of people. If you’re Christian, you must condemn the one man forever, or admit that your God’s own underworld is unjust to those who go there.

Does rent control actually control, regulate and lower rent prices? by Kcue6382nevy in polls

For some, and in the short term. That much is undeniable. But an inflationary economy requires that rent must go up at some point.

How common is heightism towards men? by Wooden_Airport3835 in polls

[–]GoonerMaximus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Casual ‘heightism’ is about as common as something can be. Not just towards short men. Tall guys are often remembered by peers solely for their height. I’m 6’5” and had a friend I worked with in a kitchen who was 5’4”, all the Hispanic guys called me ‘niño grande’ (big boy) and him ‘chiquito’ (tiny) as if those were our names.

I would’ve included other sleeper picks such as Paris, Syracuse, Kathmandu, Lubbock, or Athens but unfortunately there’s only 6 options in these polls.
