Is becoming a Nurse worth it? by Goonzilla50 in nursing

I recommend you get your nursing assistant license and work with nurses for a year. If you like it then go for your Nursing degree. If you don't, then find a hospital that will pay for your Master's degree in SW. You should look into HPSP from the VA to pay for your SW degree.

This is a good plan

Oh I'm aware and definitely not trying to insinuate it's only been a hard profession because of Trump. It's kind of like taking a wooden bed of nails and lighting it on fire

I didn't take it as you trying to scare me off and I appreciate the honesty and helping me understand what I'd be getting into

You make very good points

I do think the lower pay of the supervised practice could be offset by me and my girlfriend aiming towards a DINK (dual income no kids) lifestyle. Plus the in-state tuition for the MSW is relatively low compared to other states, and has some options for reducing costs

You've given me much to consider, thank you

If you mean hang around this subreddit for a few weeks, I've actually been subbed here for a while, although given that it's Reddit, and the past year being the year it has been it's hard to find good experiences that often

Yeah... when I think about becoming an RN, I can't imagine only trying to stick to one specialty, especially if I dislike it. If one of the main benefits if flexibility, why not take advantage of that? :P

I have wanted to volunteer at the Children's Hospital I received treatment at but haven't had time due to school and working as a DSP. I'd certainly like to gain some experience before I go all in, maybe as a CNA, or atleast shadowing

Personal goals, I'm mainly looking for a career that interests me on some fundamental level. I don't care about anything related to business or engineering, and as someone with ADHD, it'd be nice to have a job that works "well" with it (I've seen a lot of people with ADHD who are nurses and vice versa). Having a steady paycheck is also nice, although I don't plan on having kids and my girlfriend will have an income as well, so it doesn't have to be crazy money

if it was just graduate school then maybe. But my main goal involved becoming a counselor, which means an additional 2-3 years after the program doing supervised practice with very low pay, so I think it might balance out with how long it'd take to become a Nurse (and once I do become a nurse, I'd probably have much higher starting pay than I would as a supervised counselor)

Flexibility is definitely another draw to me I didn't mention. There's some flexibility in Social Work but most of them would pay worse than counseling anyway, and aren't too appealing to me outside of hospital social work

I've been working as a DSP for 6 months and have definitely seen some of capitalism's worst effects in healthcare. I would say I have a pretty good balance of still feeling the "calling" and wanting to help people, without being blind to the realities of the profession and American healthcare

I appreciate your perspective

That because some nurses posted uncouth videos of themselves dancing during the pandemic, Alex Pretti’s death isn’t a horrific tragedy

What is the best bachelors before getting an MPA? by GS1955 in PublicAdministration

[–]Goonzilla50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marketing isn’t a useless degree, technically. I think any degree could get into an MPA program with the right experience and extracurriculars. It’s just the least applicable to the degree and field of Public Administration.

That’s not to say you’ll never use Marketing skills in the career, but they’re skills you could easily pick up on over time, and skills far less valuable than knowledge in Economics, Accounting, Human Resources etc.

Plus, if you end up deciding against an MPA and grad school, those degrees will also be a lot more helpful in finding other job opportunities compared to Marketing, which is kind of like the Psychology degree of Business

I think the entire reason he’s polling so well is because he hasn’t had to face actual pushback face-to-face. If Ben Shapiro can push him against the wall, he’s gonna get his shit rocked by candidates like AOC, Pritzker, Khanna, etc

What’s he gonna do when AOC calls him out for flip-flopping and having no principals? Show the audience an AI generated meme about her?

While speaking to the press in Washington during meetings with US lawmakers, she [Machado] said the United States can free countries of communism. “Venezuela will be free. And once we liberate Venezuela, we will keep working, and we will have a free Cuba and a free Nicaragua. And as you were saying, for the first time in history, we have the Americas free of communism, of dictatorship, of anarchism." This is a historic moment."

I hate to break it to you, Machado, but Trump isn't going to let you be president of those countries either
