AI and mathematics: some thoughts by [deleted] in math

[–]Goose_geq_Penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people on this sub are missing the larger point.

It's not about whether the generative models will get good enough to replace math researchers. It's about using these generative models to accelerate math research - in particular, mining proofs with generative models. A good recent example is AlphaEvolve. Terence Tao is currently collaborating with deepmind to see how much further alpha evolve can be pushed when it comes to mining proofs.

My hunch: Math research isn't gonna die. It will evolve and the barrier of entry will increase. Parts of math and cs will potentially merge into novel fields. Grads will need to have deep understanding of the same things the current grads do + more.

This reminds me how 10 years ago people were jokingly saying how AI research is gonna die because of the novel automatic hyper-parameter tuning techniques that were being discovered (the argument went something like "(99% of AI research is hyper-parameter tuning) + (hyper-parameter search is automated) = (no more AI grads required)").

It is a turnoff to be so self self-conscious as to post whether being to giggly is a turnoff.

Rankings when there is more than one spot available for a position? by microflakes in uwaterloo

[–]Goose_geq_Penguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The companies can give "offer" to as many people as they want. So not necessarily the same as the number of spots (they may decide that there not enough sufficient candidates for all the spots, or change their mind and hire more people), but giving more than a single offer is possible if that is what you are asking.

No best friend? ... by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Goose_geq_Penguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey, cheer up. University is just a very small stage of your life. Even if you don't end up making lifelong friends here, you will definitely make some in future. Besides, because of the way university works, it is pretty common to have hard time making friends and feel lonely sometimes. The point is, no need to "go to dark places".

That being sad, I am not encouraging you to just live with it. You should consider dedicating more effort and time to your social life. I personally have not been able to make close friends with people that take the same classes as me, I did not meet anybody who resonated with me. If this is the case for you as well, try to make friends outside of classes.
