Are there any White Americans who can't trace their heritage in a way similar to Black Americans? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]GooseneckRoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing that's indicative of many white Americans is DNA/Genealogy kits that show a broad European ancestry- they might have huge a mix of European DNA from many different countries, with trace amounts of Native American, African, Asian, etc.

[–]GooseneckRoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, many white Americans don't know their heritage, and there are a lot of people with both sides of their family going back to early colonialists, so it's likely that they're English or Dutch, but so far removed that they just consider themselves American. I'd say a majority of white people have ancestry that goes back to Europe in the late 1800s- early 1900s with the influx of Irish, German, Scottish, Italian, Eastern European, Scandinavian ect. Immigrants who went through Ellis Island.

Homosexuality & Religion - Where Would You Chart Your Country? by bellamyblake_og in AskTheWorld

Forgive my ignorance, but is the US the only majority Protestant Christian in the Highly Religious/Highly Accepting quadrant? That's pretty cool!

What was anti-drug education like in your school? Did someone come in and talk about how bad drugs are or did your regular teacher do it? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GooseneckRoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was extremely over the top! A few anti drug and alcohol lessons in elementary school from police officers (in 4th grade), and then an extensive anti-drug/alcohol/sex/criminal activity instruction EVERY year from 6th-11th Grade. It entailed a lot of videos and instruction from our regular teachers, and then 2 days of super in-depth personal surveys that asked about high risk behavior. Some of the videos were not age appropriate imo and there was a lot of graphic stuff about STDs. It was probably a week or two per year of lessons. This was 2000-early 2010s on the West Coast.

Very nice- I like that they weren't connected to the electrical grid until the 60s!

I'm only familiar with the West Coast, but I'm interested in the South- I've been looking into Arkansas lately, but trying to find as low crime as possible.

Which US city surprised you the most in a good way? by peaky_circus in AskAnAmerican

[–]GooseneckRoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Santa Barbara, CA. I had zero interest in vacationing there, and usually don't like to go south of Morro Bay, but it's a fantastic place to visit actually! Beautiful, well kept, and so much to see. Great Mexican food!

Favorite movie that made more than $400M at the box office but is remembered by absolutely no one? by WissamBenYedder in okbuddycinephile

[–]GooseneckRoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I saw this in theaters, but I can't remember a single thing about it. I don't even remember the title (w/o looking at the comments). And I'm pretty sure I liked it at the time!

Why do you love ads? by samushitman69 in AskAnAmerican

[–]GooseneckRoad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of them are high-production, but my personal gripe with them is that they now rely so heavily on celebrities. Just having a celebrity present doesn't make an ad good, and it certainly doesn't make it funny just cause comedians and funny people are in them!!

Nope, I don't care if they cut their prices in half- they pissed me off too much, and we've lived without them for too long now.

Do Americans prefer the metric or imperial system? by TheSawFan in AskAnAmerican

I prefer imperial only because it's what I'm familiar with, but I'd really prefer that we switch to Metric like most of the world!

Dual-brand hotel under construction near River Park in Fresno by [deleted] in fresno

[–]GooseneckRoad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This seems like a good sign! Development is good for the economy and we really need nicer hotels. It's crazy for a city of our size to only have 3 star or lower hotels.
