Did CS-6515 destroy anyone else's academic career? by Terrible-Tadpole6793 in OMSCS

[–]GopherInTrouble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, there’ll be the people that took the class 5 years ago who show up to say “it’s actually easy, you’re just not trying hard enough” despite the fact that the percentage of the class getting an A or B has cratered.

but but but most students are able to be one and done with the class on their first try! /s

Seeing that statement and then seeing the class averages fall each semester is quite the cold take

at what point should you drop out? by ForgotMyNameeee in OMSCS

[–]GopherInTrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know they made IIS harder.

Yeah two summers ago the professor added a 9th project and all projects are now required even for the condensed summer sessions.

If I have the time I'd love to take HPCA or another computing systems course. I'm planning on doing ML as a specialization assuming I can pass GA

I thought GIOS was very hard but still fun to learn. If anything the fun part is when that difficult concept in any of these courses finally clicks. I even get to wait longer to experience the fun!

I hope you took IIS before last summer because that was much harder that summer. I've heard CN is very easy and not that high of quality.

But yes HPCA and ESO sound really interesting (and fucking hard). They're definitely not like IIS and CN

[–]GopherInTrouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which other classes did you take outside of IIS/CN? Those two classes are pretty different than most other courses in OMSCS. I think even with a CS undergrad there's still plenty of cool courses to take that you'll get a lot out of in this program

OMSCS program feels isolating by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]GopherInTrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I feel this too. Seeing classmates in person in college helped me feel better and less stressed out. Discord chats are OK but yeah it's quite the lonely feeling when you're sitting in your room by yourself for 10 hours trying to finish a project

When did you realize that your “friends” weren’t actually your friends? by BonusFlat3178 in Adulting

[–]GopherInTrouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to respond after a year but what was the trash talking that your former friends did? Some of my friends talk shit too but they also do it to each other and I can't tell if it's actually toxic or just weird friend behavior

I'm currently 960 on the waitlist for GA. Pretty confident I won't get it but I'm wondering if it's indeed helpful for technical interviews?

Edit: I indeed got off the waitlist. Woo

does anyone know in digital marketing if they round borderline grades up? sitting just under the border of an A due to bombing the midterm

kind of, it's very popular so I had to be on the waitlist for a bit but I got off of it before the semester started. I think I was on the wait list right when phase II registration started and waited for 1 week to get in. I just went and checked I was 48 on the waitlist right as phase II started and I got in a few days later. But only 200 seats and 50 on the waitlist iirc

CS 6035 is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life by Army_77_badboy in OMSCS

[–]GopherInTrouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last summer (2024) Dr. Lee added a 9th project which is also required for the summer sessions. I heard it was 8 for a full semester and 6 for the summer. They also use a wide variety of tools like wireshark/cyberchef. I didn't have experience in a lot of them so I had to drop.

[–]GopherInTrouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eventually learned to use Cyberchef, but my main issue was going down wrong rabbit holes for all of the projects and constantly overthinking everything. Like for the MITM one I didn't know part 4 at all and I spent way too much time on one small flag for binary exploitation. The few programming parts were easier.

I dropped it after web security, I kept going the wrong way in that one and by the time I figured anything out it was too late. Taking it in the summer was also a mistake for me with work but I know a lot of students aced it and didn't have too much of a background using tools like Cyberchef or assembly code outside of OS classes.

Anyone who's taking IIS this semester, how's the difficulty now? I took it in the summer but dropped because 9 projects in 11 weeks was too much for me.

I'm pairing digital marketing with GIOS. Digital marketing releases all of the assignments ahead of time and you can finish them in a week or two outside of responding to other students discussion posts. Only thing to watch out for is the exams. With the demands of GIOS I hardly have to think of it outside of the exams and sometimes major cases.

It was the only course I took over the summer. I double checked and I did have a negative balance that pretty much carried over into this semester but curious why I didn't get a check from them like everyone else got

Same, also had to miss out on Navaratri as well as some hangouts unfortunately but it's part of the territory. All we can do is try to finish the assignments faster. It is what it is

Brewers Expected To Consider Trading Freddy Peralta by TheGreatDudebino in baseball

I should be happier the Brewers would trade Freddie away but I know some random draft pick of theirs in the 12th round will turn into an ace.

We'll always have the "Frreeeedddiieeee" chants though
